Well the C-dale info was a bust, it's not $450 more like $900 so it's out of the question.

This Mountian biking stuff is as addictive as my ATV stuff is... LOL Well maybe not as expensive but still addictive.

THIS IS ABSOLUTELY NOT A MOUNTAIN BIKE!

I bought a 2009 Trek 3700 Brand new and here is my story:

Where to start...
After 2 weeks the back tire bent going down a 6 inch curb. I weigh 150lbs.
The shop declined warranty replacement.
Trek declined warranty replacement and leads you around in circles.
This bike felt like a good bike compared to my $99 department store bike, but it cannot take any abuse whatsoever.
This is absolutely NOT a mountain bike..

See for yourself, they put the same wheels on the low-end bike path bikes.

This bike is a Bike Path Bike in disguise as a mountain bike.

Do yourself a Favor and go buy a bike at Target.

At least department stores have a RETURN POLICY!

Trek's warranty is a joke, and there is no such thing as customer satisfaction guaranteed.

It's an alright bike, but RST forks are HORRIBLE. No question. I asked people at my bike store, since I run fox, and they all said hands down the same thing. I'd go for a Specialized Hardrock, you could get one for a little over $300. Better stuff there, good, light frame.

It depends on what you want. Your original post said you wanted a bike for the city that you were also going to ride on trails, but you ride hard on trails. IMHO, based on our Trek 820, which has the same components as the 3700, but a steel frame, the 3700 is a very good bike for city and trail riding, sort of a good compromise. All the comments about buying a better mountain bike are correct, if your goal is to ride trails. We have five mountain bikes in our family. The better the mountain bike, the less of a city bike it is. So, I think you need to decide. If you want a hard core mountain bike that you ride in the city occaisionally, get something better than the 3700. If you want a bike that performs well in the city, but can handle trails, go with the 3700.

I sport a 3900...
I'd go with at least a 4300, because the frame is a tad better and has Disk brake tabs on the rear.

As far as the guy who was all pissed about warranty up there, The frame is warrantied.... not the tires or components...
If you read the warranty slip, you'd realize that.

Anyways, that was my advice, go with a 4300 or higher.

I dumped a lot of money into my 3900, only to have a bike that has 1 disk brake, and a geometry that I, personally, am not much of a fan of anymore.

This is like going after Ford, GM, Dodge etc. for your tire blowing out.... the Vehicle (frame) company is not responsible for the components.

go after the company that made wheels....

Do not go to target.... -_-

Im guessing that you did not read your warranty, Yes you only went off a 6 inch curb but how did you land? did you flex sideways? did you land flat or were you going up over the curb and miss your hop and smash your wheel into the curb?
You bought entry level bike, I work in a shp that sell Trek and have never seen a warranty clam refused by Trek Ive seen people bring in 4 year old Bontrager wheels and have no problem. Ive seen frames come in with no more then the word of the person that they were the original owner get replaced.
Its just like the parent of the bmxer who brings in the kids bike and wants it replaced becuse the frame bent while he was just ridindg along, but you know full well t hat the kid was jumping it off tables at the park.

Yes...one who "bends a back tire" is sure to be an experienced rider.

Let's see...I bought some el'cheapo 27" road wheels for my '78 schwinn SS and ride it off a curb often. I know how to land and absorb impact though, so it's still in fine shape. I bent the tires when I installed them, but the air bends them back into proper form when mounted.

I think somebody ran up a curb w/o know how to do it properly.

First off Quadzone.com your looking for something to get you into better shape for ATV racing right? I'm sure your hobby money goes into that. I would just get a bike that fit my budget. I have owned a Trek 3700, and 4300. Both were great bikes and not one to me was better then the other. I'm not an expert on bikes or bike riding but I do give em hell and have never had a problem!

i own a 2010 Trek 3700 disc...

i'm not a fan of the 7spd cassette and the altus derailer, the disc brakes are no better than the v-brakes on my 4900. that said... it's performed surprisingly good on the few trails i've taken it on. i mainly just use it for paved trails because i like the rockshox fork on my 4900 and the deore rear derailer seems to be quite a bit better too...

i bought it when i was working out of town as a cheap bike to toot around on ( i was working there a long period of time)
