Shoulder braces for crashing
I'm not asking about chest protection or serious downhill armor.
Various websites sell shoulder supports. It's basically a compression sleeve combined with a strap that goes around your chest and back. There are unilateral and bilateral versions. My biggest injuries over the last few years have been getting my arm whipped back in a crash. Nothing broken, nothing torn, but just kinda hurts and doesn't feel good for months. I wonder if these things would help prevent these kind of injuries? I would imagine I'd lose some range of motion, but that's kinda the point. I'm talking about mountain bikes, not rock climbing. Has anyone tried these? Pictures is one version but there are a few different ones I've seen. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...50a51fae1b.png |
It's happened a few times here that I ask what seems like an easy to answer question and get crickets. No worries. I'm too lazy to create an account over at MTBR and maybe some of my inquiries will help others who are searching.
I ended up ordering the 7idp shoulder support. In my original post, I had mentioned that I wanted bilateral, not unilateral but I got to thinking about it. My left is the one I've been fighting an injury with, and the right is actually 2 or 3 inches lower than my left. That probably means the bilateral version wouldn't fit very well, it'd be all bunched up or crooked. I've been happy with this company for knee pads. Seems like a better idea than some unknown stuff off Amazon. I might post up later after some time riding with it, if I remember. https://7idp.com/products/control-shoulder-support |
I have never tried it so I couldn't really comment but let us know if it works out.

I'm disappointed.
I am skinny, but probably only slightly skinny as far as cyclists go. BMI is like 21.5, not 17 or something. I ordered the small to account for my skinny arms. It's big. Like way big. I was able to stitch it up to take up extra room and I got it to fit snug. I think it offers a little support, I haven't ridden with it yet though. My kludge left a big ridge at the top of the brace where I stitched it up. This will eliminate my ability to wear a backpack/hydration pack while wearing it. It'll be used exclusively for shorter days and the fanny pack. I'm disappointed that a brace marketed as small from a cycling company is so big. It'd be small or medium in Walmart sizes. I kinda want to mess with it more, so probably won't send it back, but I'm not happy with the purchase. |
