I'm looking to replace the fork on my bike. I've currently got an '04 or '05 (not sure) SID World Cup (the one with the carbon crown and poploc lockout.) Now, this is an XC racing fork, and it's great for that (the bike was a sponsored racer's bike that I bought when he got his new one), but I find that on a lot of the trails I'm riding, the 80mm of travel can be a little jarring, especially on real rocky terrain; when I even get the full 80mm. Usually, it seems like I'm getting less. At first, I thought maybe the spacer had been put in place to limit it to 60mm, but apparently not.

I'm thinking that a 110mm or so fork might be really nice.

It's a really nice bike, way nicer than I deserve, but I got a really good deal; and I've already made all the other modifications I needed to get it dialed to my comfort. Here's where it's at right now: '04 or '05 Specialized Stumpjumper FSR, RS SID World Cup fork, fox float rlc rear shock, Hayes Carbon 9 hydros, American Classic 350 disc wheels, X.0 rear derailleur and grip shifters, XTR front derailleur and cranks, RaceFace Next Carbon riser bar, RF Deus XC stem, Egg Beater C pedals. The bars, stem, brakes, pedals, and wheels are my mods so far.

Anyway, anyone have any recommendations for a fork to replace the SID?

try the fox float 130RLC(its convertable to 100mm from 130mm if you want) if you want a fixed travel fork.. or you can try the fox talas RLC if you want adjustable on-the-fly travel.. or if you want to stay with RockShox.. try the reba line..

Looks like I can get a good deal on the Manitou Minute 2:00 100mm. What do people think of this fork? It's a little over half what the F100X would cost me.

Despite what you might hear on this board about Manitou, I think the Minute 2 is a fine fork, especially for the money. I have yet to hear about ANY manufacturer without it's share of issues in the past. From what I read manitou seems to have above average customer service.

As far as fork recommendations, seems like your looking at both XC oriented forks and all mountain forks. What type of riding are you into? Since you had a SID, I'm guessing XC. In that case I would recommend the New Manitou R7 which should be coming out any day now. It's supposed to weigh about 2.9lbs and feature 30mm sanctions, with stiffness on par with their Black line.

There's lots more. Keep in mind more people are willing voice their opinions with BAD experiences rather than GOOD ones. Of course your results will vary. I have yet to hear about a shock brand without any problems.

Don't get me started on leaky Fox Float R's, or bad bushings on new 05 F100's etc.

well depending on the fork, look at what you pay for them.... god damn if i gopt ****ty service from fox i'd be right pissed and would never buy their stuff again...

Mostly XC, but some of the trails down here can be pretty rocky, with 2 - 3 foot drops not out of the question. So, veering a little into all-mountain. The only reason I'm not looking at a longer-travel fork is that I think it'll screw up my frame geometry.

personally, (which means this is just my opinion) I would never have an 80mm fork on that bike. Specialized doesn't even sell it with an 80mm. Go 100mm or get an adjustable Talus. Putting a flexy small fork on that bike changes the ride a lot.

Yeah, the guy I bought it from was mostly a road-racer, so I think he was just going for the lightest thing he could find for those barely xc-style races that are all the rage these days. I've just been assuming that 130mm would be way too much for the frame, since it's starting with only 80mm. Maybe not?

Well, I bought a Manitou (manipoo?) minute 2:00 100mm. It seemed comparable on all the stuff I cared about, and the price was jsut too sweet to pass up. From reading reviews, it sounds like you either get a good one or you get a lemmon. Here's hoping it's a good one. Seems to hold air so far...

I pricematched it at the supergo shop here in Tucson, so at least I've got a real receipt and a shop with mechanics in case I have to use the warranty.

I haven't actually installed it yet, so I guess I could still return it...

I think the 100mm will do me right, tho, from the sound of things.
