Crossmax bearing service
 

The front wheel bearings in my mavic crossmax XL's have just about seized after some particularly nasty weather here in Auckland. Does anyone know the bearing size for them, and can anyone recommend a website with instructions on how to service them - mavic just say take to your service agent - yeah right!

Don't know the size but a bearing supply shop should be able to match you up with a generic sealed bearing. I'd bring in the hub/bearing so they can measure things. I've done this with all kinds of equipment besides bikes, they just take out micrometer/calipers to get bearing size then match things up. Might be considerably cheaper and/or better quality than the original too.

I've not been inside Mavic hubs but my guess is you can just tap them out with a soft metal (e.g. copper, brass) drift.

If you have luck post results/source so others can also be aware of alternative parts sources.

As legendontour suggested take the wheel to a bearing shop and let them figure out which bearings you need. I have a friend that did it himself with no problems, Mavic uses standard size bearings.

Thanks - I did knock them out - surprisingly easy compared to previous XSIV hubs and discovered they were a japanese bearing - NTN with 25mm bore and 37mm ext diam. SKF bearings here in NZ supplied me with industrial quality ones for NZ$20 each, and they are now back in and sound better than the originals ever did (ie silent)

Hi did you ever solve the problem. I too have maxic Crossmax wheels my front is noisy - works OK etc but I cannot fathom out how to get inside it just to re greese. By the way AUKLAND - I was in NZ last summer for 5 weeks north & south GREAT. We stayed in the north on Thornton bay near Wakatany. Coming back in 2010 can you tell me of good bike hire shops I currently ride a giant VT1 5" travel, live in Spain & into exteam XC. SIMON
