XC MTB racing rim
WHAT KIND OF RIM WOULD YOU USE? for hard core, cross country racing, it doesn't matter what kind of terrain, with a Shimano XT hub v-brake hardtail MTB (or hub/spoke combination) rear.

Not sure if they still sell it, or have a newer version, but I ride an xtr rear hub, wheelsmith double butted spokes laced to a Bontrager Mustang asym. New and back in the day. It still rocks, I used to race on it and have put thousands of miles on the thing, and it is still true.

Throw the stick!!!!
If you are serious into xc then you may want to look into other hubs as well. The XT's are good hubs but weigh a freaking ton!
The front XT (non disc) hub weighs 206 grams.
The rear XT (non disc) hub weighs 384 grams.
Here are some comparisons.
DT Swiss 240 front hub - 96 grams
DT Swiss 240 rear hub - 235 grams
Chris King front hub - 112 grams
Chris King rear hub - 269 grams
The front XT (non disc) hub weighs 206 grams.
The rear XT (non disc) hub weighs 384 grams.
Here are some comparisons.

I just toasted a Mavic517 on the mississippi river bluffs. A spoke was ripped from the rim pulling out the eyelet and ripping a crack along the center of the rim. I noticed stress cracks from 4 other eyelets, as a couple more spokes broke, riding my bike home. The spokes were DTs. I'm sure DTs are as good as Weelsmith, but I think Wheelsmith spokes have better karma. The Mavic517 rim didn't seem wide enough for a 2.4" WTB tire, especially at low pressure. I'm not too worried about the hub, although on my next rear rim I would like a killin' hub. I would really like to know what a good hardtail downhill setup would be. The weight is not a factor in the rear wheel.

I am using DT swiss 240's front and rear myself. I am very happy with them and they are super light, it felt neat when i was lacing them up. I have laced up XT rear hubs and those things are about 1 pound each! As for rims, i am using Sun 0 deg lites. I think sun makes a great rim, at a better price than mavic.

If Sun is owned by Hayes, what happened to the Ringle name. Coincidentally my headbadge is a customized graphic of Sun/Ringle.

I'd be sad to see Sun rims go up in price. They were the few things in the cycling world that violated Bontrager's Law. I love my Sun 0-deg XCs.

Why dont you try Alex Rims instead of the ultra expensive, lightweight, not so durable stuff?

2.4" tire for XC racing? Doesn't the wider tread create more rolling resistence? Low pressures as well Maybe I'm wrong, but I've always gone with a narrower tire and higher pressures during my XC races. I want every advantage I can get against my fellow racers. Wider tires and low pressures just make me pedal harder.
I've tried a few different wheelssets including the Crossmaxs and my favorite has been the most durable and most comfortable of all. Its a set of 32 hole, Mavic 517 Ceramics 3X laced with DT spokes and Chris King Hubs.

DT Swiss makes some awesome rims. Check out the XR4.1's. Strong as hell man. I've beat mine up every way possible and they're still true! Plus, they aren't too expensive either.

Velocity rims are the best I've ever built up, pair those with some nice hubs and you're set. The Synergy rim comes to mind at around 400g in a 26", 450g in a 29" if I recall.

Something to be said for traction and not getting the crap beat out of you by a 60psi 1.85" tire...

First off use the right tool, 517's are not DH rims.

I have Mavic X517 with XTR hubs front and back (V-brake) and they have been great for XC/singletrack with a lot of roots and rocks. Been using them for a few months and the have been fine (i.e., for truing). I was running Sun Mach IV before which were a little lighter but needed a lot more truing

i have 2.4s and i like the torture of a low pressure hit riding up concrete steps. for those of you who consider XC racing without harder hits than a downhiller, and puttin' a line through the middle of a city. You can get by with those lightweigt "pretty" rims. the trails that run from all the conditions that would never appear on a closed course. 517 rims are too thin for 2.4s, although i'm keeping my 517 on front. You would be surprised at the amazing sprints you can get with oldstyle mountain bike racing geometry, not to mention low gears.

Yes TroyLeeRacer199 High pressure would make it worse. That's why it's a compromise between losing traction (high pressure) and the ability to crawl up concrete (low pressure) And somewhere there's a suspension factor in tire pressure on a hardtail. The Mavic 721 looks like a nice rim. I'm sure i'm going with Wheelsmith spokes though. My next rim is gonna be a Chris King hub, Wheelsmith double butted spokes and Mavic 721s
