Im new to mountain bike riding and want to buy a bike.

What size bike will suit my height. Im 6ft7inches (201cm) tall.


So far I have seen mountain bikes go up to about 25inches. Are these big enough for my height? Are they too big for my height and should I go for a 22inch or 23 inch or which size? Or do I need a custom made sized bike bigger than 25inch.

The inch sizes I have given are the size of the bike frames I think.

Any help with bike sizes that would suit my height would be appreciated?

try and find some bikes with maybe a L or XL sized frame and demo them.. if you like one of them.. then get the bike.. cause i have never come across someone who is more than 190cm.. yr tall!!

Your height is not the only issue. It is your inseam length that is equally (or more) important.

Why not go down to your LBS and ask them to fit you?

No flame intended but I never cease to be amazed by someone that asks people who can't see you or the bike you are sitting on, what size best fits them.

If it's within your budget, think long and hard about a 29er. At your height bigger wheels make a lot of sense. An entry level hardtail starts around 1k so if cost is an issue they may be out but it's something to think about. A Fisher XL has a 25.5 inch TT which might be ok with a bit longer stem.

I used to ride with a guy years ago who was 6'7" and he never had a bike that was actually big enough for him. Even with the largest bike he could find he was still running a 150mm long stem and 400mm seatpost due to his 38.5 inch inseam.

Agreed wholeheartedly. The pros and cons of a 29"er (I add "cons" only to be fair, but in reality find them insignificant) are applied equally to riders of any size, but the larger wheels really are of a greater benefit to larger riders.

As such, you'll find many 29"er frames taylored to "riders of height".

It's still difficult to walk into most any local bike shop and see one 29"er, let alone a selection of sizes to choose from, which is definitely one of the "cons" -- but the big wheeled community is alive and growing by the day.

If you haven't, pay a visit to the 29"er Forums at MTBR, the most active online twenty-nine inch community. There is a great FAQ File and a bunch of really helpful, resourceful enthusiasts there that can get you pointed in the right direction, or at the very least answer any questions you might have.

i am only 6'3" but still, i am one of the tallest people that ride around here. My rig is a fisher mt tam 29er, and it is great. has a 21.5 inch frame and it is great. i think that a 23 would fit you like a glove, at least with 29er wheels. the only other person in my ride group who is as tall as me rides a surly Karate Monkey with a riged fork and it is a 29er also. the wheels work perfectly for us. i can go over anything that the other people in my ride group can do, and i just started riding.

I've only heard of a "way big" size frame....
I'd say you might need to get in touch with this guy.

Yao Ming's custom Gunnar, by the way, is a 29"er.

my inside leg seam length is 101cm (40inches).

my LBS didnt know about fitting and said a 20inch frame was my size.

The bike seemed too small.

As said with the 29er, plus also look into getting a custom frame built for you.
