Chris King Pretty and Strong Stemcap

Does anyone have a CK Pretty and Strong Stemcap on their bike? I think I might buy one and slap it on my bike.

I think it benefits breast cancer research - buy it and support a good cause.

They are also doing a ltd. edition pink hubset and headset to support breast cancer research. Very worthy cause.

Excuse my first comment in that case - I was not aware of the support aspect.

not much suport imo. $2 for a $130 headset. Competitive Cyclist has a better deal going on, $42 for the headset at $150.

Exactly how much do you think Chris King gets? It's a thing called markup. The various distribution networks have a percentage over what they pay that they charge to the retailer and then the retailer has to mark it up on their end to make a profit. That plus the fact that U.S made goods of this quality, following the high labor and environmental standards that they've imposed on themselves doesn't come cheaply.

I've been told the figure is more like $5 for the headset. Assuming that the $129 USD listed price over at Speedgoat has a 30% markup this means that the the wholesale price is $100 coming from the distributors. I don't know the markup between manufacturer and distributor but will assume it also is 30% (although I suspect it is more along the lines of 50%+). This means that CK is selling the headset for about $77.

If CK is giving $5 on $77 that means 6% of GROSS. The percentage likely doubles on NET but since I don't know how much it costs to make a headset for CK, I will assume it is something like $25. So the $5 donation on $50 profit means 10% donation. Not too shabby.

Bear in mind that I am wildly speculating on the markups and manufacturing costs, but at least it should illustrate waht it means if you read that CK is giving $X dollars per headset.

Percentages and markups aside, I think it ultimately comes down to one of two things:

1) You want a pink CK component, and the fact that a portion of what you spend goes to breast cancer research is a bonus

or

2) You couldn't care less about pink components so you just donate directly to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation: www.komen.org

or you could do both.

i think the cool thing about the pink King components is the awareness aspect. much better than some cheesy "ribbon" pin. i'd donate and buy one, had i the cash.

That's exactly the way I see it. Even if there's only $1 or $2 given per headset, look how we are all discussing that this is for breast cancer research. I have given money about 5 different ways to breast cancer (supported a walker for a walk-a-thon, bought baked goods at a bake sale, bought a pink rubber bracelet, etc.) but the most important part is Awareness and Chris King's gesture has ensured that in a mountain bike forum we actually discuss it and we all state how we support it.

The stats are staggering, I think it's something like 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer. I have a wife and two daughters. I don't like to hear stats like that.

Anyway, I'll be getting a pink headset. When I hit the trial and get comments or questions from people about the headset I'll tell them exactly why I got it.
