Trek is just a company following trends, show no true improvements in their frames and rely on one roadie to get their name out in the market, not exactly the way to earn respect on the mtb side of things. Has a person ever won a UCI world championship once on a Trek downhill bike, nope. Fabien Barel the person who won the last two consecutive world championships was on what? A Kona Stab Supreme, not to mention the first two crankworx slopestyles was won by a rider on a Kona. Never hear a thing from trek on the cyclocross scene either, One of the most successful cyclo cross bikes ever in cyclocross races has been Kona's Jake the Snake lineup.

Trek will always be the laughing stock in the mtb world. They ditched a bike that was really good in the bruiser line and replaced it with a line that is extremely lacking in the jack line. With the Jack 3 how is that supposed to compete with bikes like the Kona Cowan, Kona Stuff, or Specialized's P series They haven't changed a thing on their xc bikes since 2000, their lineup is getting really stale.

To review, Kona makes an effort each year to improve their bikes even if the change is very small and Trek only changes paint color from year to year, and drop lines that are successful to ones that will likely tank big time.

Let me know when trek gets a clue of what their doing and make a good bike that can effectively match up with other makes of mountain bikes. I've assembled alot of treks, and to be completely honest I wouldn't let a friend ride one, thin tubing, poor looking welds WAY too much inhouse parts.

ok this always bothers me, andywithglasses, revmonkey, have you owned all three brands, have you experienced good reasoning why specialized is better than both(not saying it is). Thats called unfair biased. Now having a preference because that's whats worked for you is alright, now unless you've owned a comparable bike from all three companies you can't really say "my bike is better". I've owned Trek and Giant and don't really have a biased my Trek is a good MTB and my Mosh is a good DJ BMX bike can't compare the two so i'm not gonna say which is better than the other.

yes i do. i can't say that i've extensively ridden a kona (though i have ridden one), i can say that i do not like treks. i've ridden a friend's 4500 many many times, ridden an old trek VRX200 frame, ridden the bruisers (1&3, 1 especially) many many times, and i can say with confidence that the reason why i didn't buy the bruiser is because i don't like trek. they just don't make me feel good. i don't know what it is, but they all seem to have this 'cheap' feel to them. specialized on the other hand, mm mmm every time i ride its **************

What bothers me is people constantly knock trek in tons of threads in the mtb forum. Its really offensive to someone like me, who has a 7 year old trek bike which has over 1500 miles on it and Ive never had to replace any components. Im not talking about the bruiser line or the jack line. Im referring to the basic hardtails that trek makes, which are absolutely wonderfull bikes. Maybe you don't like the feel of a trek bike, does that make trek suck? Seriously, all that trek makes on the bike is the frame, everything else is bontrager, sram, and shimano which are all respected brands.

Maybe the trek downhill bikes suck, or maybe the jack line sucks, But I can assure you that the hardtail line for trail riding are great bikes.

When I went bike hunting, just about every bike store I went too agreed that trek makes very strong durable mtbs. These are people with years of bike experience.

I have had some experience with all three companies, and they each do their own things well. Kona really has the whole DH/Freeride thing going on. If it's sketchy, they're good to go. The Jake series is sweet, no bones about it. Would I ever buy their XC bikes? Nope - they tend to run slack head angles which make the bikes handle sluggishly in singletrack and climbs [sweeping generalization]. Specialized and Trek make great hardtails for XC riding - probably the best bang for the buck out there. They also make great road bikes, with handling that caters to most riders. Specialized also does a fantastic job on the entry to mid-level full-suspension market [two words: Horst Link] which is where they make all of their money. Where both companies fall down is in their high-end product. Too freaking expensive for what you get. This has allowed all the small high-end mfrs to flourish, which is the way it should be. I've owned 4 Specialized bikes and two Treks, and as long as you stay in the middle of their product line, you can't go wrong, IMHO. I have ridden enough Konas to get a feel for their strengths, and that is going fast downhill through the woods.

The OP was talking about pricing, right? It's on their website right now. For example, MSRP for the Fuel EX 9.5 is a whopping $5499. There is no way it should be over $2k more than the EX 9. That's nutz.

BTW, Trek makes Bontrager look it up sometime. Maybee you should think twice about arguing with someone who worked at a bike shop where one of the lines was Trek for 4 years. I'm speaking from a higher performance view, and to be honest trek's offerings seriously lack to other makes at the same price range. For the beginner they are good bikes, but the high end stuff lacks something awful.
