Hayes HMX1
The Hayes HMX1 mechanical brakes came on my bike. (GF Tassajara 03 or 04 cannot remember). I dont know that much about bikes and although they suit me fine I'm not sure whether they are considered as good brakes by the wiser riders. Does anyone know how to adjust these? I'm riding quite a lot at the moment cause I just moved over to Scotland and am enjoying the wet and muddy countryside!! How long do the pads last under normal braking??

I have Mx1's and they're crap.

I was afraid I would be told that. Any idea how to adjust them?

The only real way to "adjust" them is to physically reposition the entire system so that the inner pad is where you want it and then set the front loose and use the adjusters on the handlebars or the ones on the brake itself.

The MX1 are Hayes top level mechanical brakes and if they suit your riding needs, don't worry what other people think of them.
And pad life is dependent on so many different variables (i.e., terrain, riding style, weather, etc). |
I have a set of the (2004) MX-1's and like them very much. They're alot less trouble than the HFX-9 DH's I also have...
I've heard the older versions of the Hayes mechanical's weren't very good. |

Thanks. Actually I quite like them myself and they always stopped me fine.

I have actually found that they work just wine if you break the pads in correctly and keeps oils away. Also 8 inch rotors make a hell of a difference.
