Ever since I first saw one, a '01 Bianchi Grizzly has been my favorite frame. Its gorgeous, small diametre Dedaccai steel tubing, classic geometry, and ultra light. Its a race oriented hardtail, low head tube high seat setup like my old Stumpjumper which I sold because of that. Anyways, the oppertunity has come where I can purchase a really clean '01 Grizzly frame... I'm already picking out parts for it... convince me this is a bad idea...! One guy I worked with had the same frame built up with average parts at about 23lbs w/ a Rockshox Judy Air. I was all set on a 29er for the versatility, but this bike is just too hot, though not as practical as the 29er.

Parts I have so far...
Shimano LX/XT bastardized crankset
Specialized/Ritchey STOUT f hub, DT Onyx r Hub 32h (probably going to be laced 3x to Velocity Synergy rims, 410g 26" 450g 29")
SRAM ESP9.0 Gripshift
XTR V-brakes (no disc tab on the frame)
Easton Monkeylite Carbon lo-rise bar
Serfas ultralite saddle
Specialized Roll-X Pro 2.0 tires (best tire ever? I think so)

The Grizzly, if you couldn't tell, has kind of been my dream bike, but at the same time its not the most practical. Should I say practicality be damned? It would be sweet to have a steel mountainbike that matches my roadbike...

Sorry just kinda thinking outloud as I ditch class and drink insane amounts of coffee...

God its hot...

Get the 29er

you can still use all your parts, except for the tires

I am biased though. The next MTB frame for me is either a 29er Gunnar Ruffian, A Vicious Cycles SS Motivator, or a Soulcraft Holy Roller. Although, by next spring I might change my mind.
I am convinced about the big wheels for big guys theory.

Either way, just make sure it is steel.

A steel 29er frame is going to set me back 3x what this frame would though, unfortunately. I'd probably get a Fisher (yuck) and ride it for a year and swap the frame out for something expensive and steel eventually.

What about a surly KM?

Or On One is now making a 29er inbred.

Anyway, I like spending other peoples money

The Surly has horizontal dropouts which sucks for disc brakes, and its about as heavy as a tank. The On-One is ok, but has those adjustable dropouts (no true geared vertical dropout model) and I just don't feel that good about that design, plus the geometry is a little slack for my taste, and its not much lighter than a KM.
