Rear shock price fixing

While looking for a rear shock something occured to me. Seems like the only ways to get a rear shock are going through a LBS, buying from an individual (ebay) or getting one with a bike. Why aren't rear shocks sold through retailers like Nasbar, pricepoint and what not. Seems like when you can easily get a allright fork for around 200 300 bucks new you have to spend as much or more to get a rear shock.
