Choosing V-brakes: Deore LX M570 vs. Avid Single Digit 7

I'm planning on buying a V-brake setup for a custom build project. Originally, I was considering Avid Single Digit 7 with the Speed Dial levers after reading numerous positive experiences on them. I was/am also thinking about Deore LX with the M570 ('04 paralellogram) V-brakes and M571 levers. However, I did a search on Avid SD 7 on this forum and read several negative experiences. Problems ranging from "slop" of the calipers on the mounting bosses, not able to tighten on the bosses properly, to arms having to be re-centered too many times. On MTBReview.com, 97 people reviewed Avid SD 7. It has an average rating of 4.86/5 and even got the Consumer Choice Award, versus 4.23/5 for LX M570.

I'm confused now. What do you guys think, should I buy the LX or SD-7? Pro's, con's and personal experience is appreciated.

I've always loved SD7's and haven't experienced any of the problems you've mentioned. However, I've never used a Shimano V-Brake before, so I have no way of comparing the two.

SD7's are a really nice brake! I am always reminded of that whenever i really need to jam on the brakes. These are impressive, and well priced

When I ran v-brakes I always bought Avid's. At one point or another I had shimano lx's and, xt's as well though. I would rather have the avid's than any shimaon v-brake. My favorite v-brake was the avid sd-ti's.

What about the "Bend Zone™". "Designed to bend the handle, not damage the body". Does this effect lever reach or anything?

Voted for Avid, as I'm trying to keep my MTB 'Shimano-free', succesfully, I might add ;)

To me it doesn't really make a difference. With Pad brakes, its how fast and how hard you pull the lever. But I would say what ever is cheaper.

"bend zone" ?? you mean the taper @ the lever?
if you leave lever clamp at bar a smidgeon loose it will "give" in the event of "face braking" or is it "face breaking"?.......hmmm

Most seem in favor of the SD's. Keep those votes coming, I can only spend the money once. :)

Thought I'd let you all know I decided to go with the Avid's. I was tempted to get Magura HS33's to the last minute because of a good deal I found, but didn't. I only hope they will send me the '05/'06 SD levers, and not the one's with the funky color and the Live Action View Slots (or however it's called). I should recieve them soon. Anyway, thanks to those who voted in the poll (and in the thread), and I wish you all a Happy New Year!

I just got some SD7's new off ebay in a box, $25 each! How much will you get them for Sp@eder?

Sp@eder 12-29-05 07:36 PM

I paid € 70 for the whole set (V-brakes & matching levers), which is approx. 82 US dollars. Very cheap, for European standards. :)

I voted for the SD7's, even though I've never used them. But I have a set, along with the Speed Dial 7 levers, on their way to me. I ordered them from Blueskycycling.com for $75. According to UPS, they should arrive on January 3 :) .
