What is this wheelset worth?
 

What do you guys think this non-disc wheelset is worth? They have been used for about 3 months in dry conditions.

Front:
Shimano XTR M950 non-disc hub, 32H, 3x, laced to a Mavic X517 (silver)

Rear:
Shimano XTR M950 non-disc hub, 32H, 3x, laced to a ceramic Mavic X517 (black)

Not sure on the spokes but they are double butted.

Couldn't guess the price, but check your spoke heads. They should either have a little DT logo, or perhaps a W.

I run similar wheels on my bikes. Great hubs, great rims. Actually, I don't have any ceramic ones, so I don't know about that one. I think you need special brake pads though. Differences in the spokes yield noticeable differences in the weight though. You said they were double butted, so they shouldn't be too heavy. I'd say $200 since they're used.

Thanks for the input...they're actually the wheels I have right now on the Rockhopper. I'm going disc in the spring and was going to put these wheels on eBay...was just trying to get an idea of how low I should start the bidding (don't want to start off too high). I have a canadian $ value in mind that I want to get but non-disc wheelsets aren't demanded as highly as disc sets.

Ceramic does require a different pad and the wheels are fairly light. The front has an actual weight of 761g and I estimated the rear to be 980g (based on the weight of the front and Weight Weenies listings). I just haven't weighed the rear because haven't had a chance to pull the tire off.

No problem, I just wanted to see if my idea of price was out of whack...some Canadian parts pricing isn't anywhere near the same ballpark as some US stuff.

Same in Australia. Right now ebay is a buyer's market. I wouldn't sell anything there for a while.

CAVEAT EMPTOR:
For E Bay. I do not know how to follow E Bay Buyers vesus sellers market. I just sold some used stuff on their and it got bid up waaaayyyy over what I would have expected. Lucky me...... How do some of these folks get over selling brand new forks of all makes but mostly Answer products for so freakin' cheap. I would never buy a fork from E Bay new or otherwise unless the deal was too good to pass up. Like waaayyy too good. What Gives.

I was watching a wheel set (similar to the one you opened the thread with), advertised last week as a pit wheel set by a national/pro level rider. They were practically new and I think they went for $220+.

I would just ride them until spring comes around, when people are looking into getting a bike built up to start riding.

Browsing online Stupidgo, I saw them NEW for 289.99.. DB 14/15 spokes Wheelsmith spokes

I've found that starting a bid too high (aka close to what you actually want to get) is bad for eBay selling success. People won't watch it or bid on it because it isn't a "steal" to start with. People watch auctions that are really low and then convince themselves to nickel and dime themselves to a price that really is no deal at all. If I were you I'd start it at around $20 and take your chances. My personal bet is that if you start it at $180 you'll get less than 5 watchers and there's a damn good chance it'll go unsold..

I agree 100%. I would list your wheels at $79.99-$99.99. I bet they get bid up to the $200 mark.

This is just my experience though. I think Mavic / XTR grabs attention from buyers. I am sure people put XTR and search cycling all the time. If they see your wheels at a steal price It will definately pique interest.

for example;
I recently sold Crossmax SL's rim brake wheels and I was hoping to get $400 for them, I would have been happy with less.

I started the bidding at 249 and they were bid up to 430 plus the $30 shipping. Maybe I was lucky, but I don't think so. Some names will get the looks. Crossmax SL and XTR are premium names. They will get looks and the lower the price the greater the interest.

Yeah, that was my concern. I wanted to start them low enough to get people interested but not too low in case they don't go anywhere. I just wasn't sure how much demand is still out there for non-disc wheels, even though they are made with good parts.

But even $200 would be okay, that's more than I was thinking, even in Canadian dollars!

I start all my auctions at (gasp!) 99 cents! Not everyone has the stomach for that though.

They do if like 70% (exaggeration or underestimation I don't know) of all ebay auctioneers they have a buddy ready to step in and bid higher to drive the bid up and protect their items from selling too low. It used to suprise me to see it, now I almost expect it.

You'll be lucky to get $100 out of them, but in any event you don't have to sell anything under what you expect if you set a "reserve" price, or end the auction early. Some ruleZ apply, but it's very easy to sell stuff on there. I simply runout of items to sell....

Wait back-up aren't the 950's 8spd hubs? I guess you could still put a 9 on them. But they are old hubs.

They are the 2003 hubs and 8spd/9spd is the same thing. Just 9spd is spaced tighter therefore the narrower chain.

Start ebay auctions low, the fee is lower and more people bid.

The Electronic garage sale.... Gotta love it.. If not for EBay I would have a whole shed full of bike stuff. We just statrted a rough and crude version of the Internet when I was getting out of the service in 1990. Net Centric Warfare they called it. See a target over there -- somewhere, send it to a General and Politician in DC, Bomb it from Barksdale Louisiana. All via this thing we now sell bike stuff over called the Internet. If only the evolution of all military hardware was so beneficial.
