On Friday I snapped my frame IN HALF WHILE RIDING! I've been doing a lot of hardcore stuff with my bike, stunts, steps, jumps, terrain, almost all of it, but not brutally hard, I'm still advancing. And just last Friday, the frame snapped IN TWO and I fell off and onto it! I was pretty shocked at what happened, THANK HEAVENS I was just across the street from the bike shop where I bought it! I tuned it in to the shop and the guy there said he can send it back to the company for replacement, but he said it'll take 4-6 weeks!!! What on earth will I do?? I thought to build a moped from a garage sale scooter (still looking around) and a broken weedwacker (but the engine's still pretty fresh). I know I can do it cause I've done very similar projects in the past, so that ought to keep me busy for a while.

It was my K2 Attack 2.0. I've done some killer riding on it though, I'm going to wait for it to snap again (if it happens to) before I buy another bike.

I would have expected it to break. It isn't a bike meant for much more than beginner level xc riding.

Im curious, exactly where did it break? When I hear about a frame breaking in two I often wonder if they all break in two in approximatly the same place or not. Did it suddenly snap or was there some warning that something was wrong?

I have broken a couple of frames until I got Kona. One was in the centre of the top tube and the other was bb casing. My uncle broke his pedalling (aluminum and he races) where the top tube meets the downtube. It broke from torquing with too much strength.

The two tubes snapped off near the front end of the frame, about 3cm away from the steering tube (I'm not very good at bike names, but I'll be soon I hope I just ride)

Hey Maelstrom, you said that you broke a couple of frames until you got a Kona. I take it that you have experience with this bike. I am thinking of getting the 2003 Nunu (my other option was the Trek 4900). What you think??

I believe your bicycle’s frame is constructed of 7005 Aluminum. An important issue with Aluminum Frames is their design life. Unlike steel and titanium, Aluminum will only take a finite number of stress cycles. While manufacturing engineers design "extra" strength into Aluminum Frames to accommodate this, it least one major US bicycle builder is on record for stating a five-year design life for their Aluminum Frames. Note: this is not clock time, it refers to constant usage time.

Products are listed by year and vendor, you can use its search engine and find if there known significant issues with products you are using/servicing. There are many different bicycle vendors and models comprising thousands and thousands of individual bicycles currently on recall!

This I know well, I recently obtained a replacement Suspension Fork (no change) for one on recall. Be advised that I had to query the Vendor for it, in as it wasn’t volunteered.

Since the K2 Attack 2.0 isn’t currently listed, you may want to file a report on this unit to provide data to protect others should this prove to be a universal issue with this particular bicycle.

Sadly the LBS community that I’ve surveyed doesn’t endeavor to contact the folks to whom they sold the faulty equipment (it is the bicycle Manufacturer’s responsibility I was informed), however many LBS’s do post the “Recalls” on their service departments bulletin boards, which is commendable.

Please always wear a helmet, ride within your known abilities especially in remote terrain and avoid riding at night. Thank you…

This doesn't sound like anything to report to any commissions. You were riding the bike well beyond its design. I will be disappointed if the LBS hooks you up with a new frame. This isn't a warranty. Quite simply, that bike is not designed for the riding you are doing. It's an entry level cross country dual suspension bike if the specs I'm seeing are correct. That should tell you that it's not a jumping bike. Get a better bike or stop abusing the one you have.

Nunu's are good but is still a xc bike not meant to take hits. You sound like you should hit the Out of bounds series. You sacrifice some component quality (midlevel so they are easy to replace) but the frames are bombproof (6'5 250 pnd VERY hard rider). Stuff is good and you should be able to find them reasonable. Salvage the components and buy a stuff frame. Most bike companies make bikes with this geometry in this range. Specialized p3, Norco Wolverine etc...Look around but if you messed up that bike go for a burlier frame.

I didn't have personal experience with that bike but I have sold them as well as have a personal vendetta against duallies under 2000$ cdn. Even then they are rarely worth it. If a dually is cheap then it is probably cheap and will break if you do any decent riding at all.

So I guess I need a new bike or at least a new frame! What frame would you suggest? I want one that isn't too spendy, not too heavy, and with the most suspension travel possible. Kind of a best bang for the buck deal.

Oh BTW - I am an entry level rider in this part of cycling... one of the resons why I got this bike, cause it had what I needed and it was cheap, but I guess I learned fast or something!

Well if you intend to do anything in your above ranking and want a good bike within that price you will be best to go for the type of geometry I described above. It is strong and a little heavy but works for xc and light freeriding. I would seriously consider that. In the price range you seem to be describing you will at best get an aggro xc fork. It won't be good enough in the long run. Save up and get a better fork in the future. 4 to 5 inches of travel will be plenty and if you get a z1 fr fork you will be able to lock the fork at 2 inches.

Well K2 already contacted the shop! They have my destructo frame and they seem to really care about getting me back to the dirt. First, the company said they didn't have any 2.0 frames in stock except for a Nissan X-Terra logo'd one, which I didn't want. They said they could get one in, but I'd have to wait. Then the shop called just a bit later and said that K2 was willing to hook me up with a Razorback Team frame that was lying around the building!!



This is what it looks like! The back shock is also adjustable via a lever adjust on the handlebars! This is super-good, I can be riding again! And that thing looks HOT! I know I should've bought a better bike myself to do what I'm doing, but just a short time after my bike broke, somebody else's 2.0 frame snapped too, so there's gotta be somethin' going on here. I dunno. An offer I just can't pass up, and they're more than happy for supporting me. Plus I'm broke still after buying it myself

That K2 isn't going to last too long as well if you continue to do a lot of jumps. The suspension design was licensed from Turner (Stinger Frame) and it's designed as a lightweight XC bike. Of course the cheaper models aren't as lightweight as the upper end stuff. If you can get that frame, do it. But save some $$$ and buy a BMX bike that you can jump with. You can get some killer deals on used BMX bikes and that way you won't be going back to the shop in another 2 months with another cracked frame.

Get the parts off your old bike, go to www.wheelworld.com and buy a Kona Roast frame, and build yourself up a real hardcore rig. Stunts, dirt jumping...All the things that make up hard core riding are tons of fun. But your only going to hold yourself back if you don't get the right equipment. That K2 is great, but it isn't what you need. It's geometry is all wrong, the parts are all wrong, and the material isn't strong enough. I know money can be a problem, but an injury is a problem too. Get your shop to hire you as a bike assembler or something, or get a paper route, and then spend that hard earned cash on the goods!!!

To be honest I would go for a non dually as wel. The kona roast is my frame and I LOVE it. Work great for every situation except for flat drops. The frame is tough (hasn't broken under me yet and that says a lot).

You'll be posting here before long with "I was riding on Saturday, and I broke my frame IN HALF" because you still won't have the right bike. Maybe you should do some research on these boards or with your local shop to find a bike that's built for what you're doing. Seems there are some experienced folks here that are trying to help.

Am I the only one that's really disappointed with the shop? C'mon, abuse a bike, break it and get a new one? Jump, you need to take the person handling your warranty at the shop out to a fine restaurant. He/she has hooked you up like you can't believe.

If you are stuck on getting a dualie, Supergo.com has a K2 Evo frame for 349. Get that and put the parts from your other bike on it.
