Good Mountain bike in the 800-1200$ range
is there such a thing as a durable/sturdy mountain bike that costs around $1000? im a road biker who would like to have a mountain bike to hack around on once in awhile in the woods or when the roads are terrible. any advice is helpful. i've been looking at some specialized full suspension bikes in the 2000 range but im not sure i want to spend that much if i'll ride in 12times a year.
thanks!
thanks!

there are lots of nice bikes at the price range you specified. maybe something from specialized or kona (i think they are over priced but nice bikes).
by the way if you are going to use it a very few times i would look at something cheaper.

Look at the 'around $500 mtb' thread on these boards.
When you near $1,000-1,200, you're basically buying the next level of components that can take a hell of a beating for a long period of time. You'd probably be best served by spending $500-550 on the bike... you won't use it enough to see the difference.
