Practice Practice Practice.

A couple of hints. Lower your seat a little. Don't use clipless pedals.

The trick is to be in a low enough gear to provide enough torque to get the wheel up. But not so much that you can't pedal once it's up.

Also, you have to find your balance point. It's right at the verge of falling over backwards. Use your rear brake and feather it to keep from ending up on your butt.

Hard to explain, but you have to pedal to keep the wheel up, lean back to help, and feather the rear brake to keep from going to far, all at once!

Once you get the wheel up you can actually turn by leaning one way or the other. If you turn the handlebars in the direction your falling, you will turn that way. Also, sticking you knee out helps.

You've really just got to practice a lot!

Alot of it is also in the mind.. conquer the fear of falling and u'll have it quicker.

Practice, that's all anybody's gonna tell you. Lower your seat, push hard one the pedals and pull up on the front end, if you feel like your going backwards, use your rear brake(not hard, modulate), if your wheel is going back down, crank some more. Did I mention practice??? People can tell you how to do it until they're blue in the face, and if you don't practice it ain't goin to do no good.

I like to practice wheelies on soft single track or soft double track.

Avoid "clicking in" until you've mastered the wheelie. It's a bummer trying to bail on 1 wheel. Doh!

Better yet use flats ;)

I have a question. Why would lowering your seat make it easier. I have never understood that recommendation. I find wheelies easier with my seat at a xc height.
