Good choice for disk brakes?
 

I have a 2000 Rocky Mountain Instinct. I love the bike, the only change I might want to make is to add disk brakes. Too many choices! :eek:

I would say that is overkill for his bike. I would suggest Avid BB7's.

For mechanical disk brakes, I'm pretty sure the consensus is Avid BB7.

For hydraulics - well, that may start a holy war.

Does the frame have tabs to mount the caliper out back?

Are bb7 mechs better than say, Hayes Sole XC hydraulics?

Hopes are finnicky to set up, but once they are, nothing can beat them.

yeah...stay away from M4's, not only are they an eye-sore, but i can probably stop faster by wedging my shoe between the fork and tire :D

for mechanical: avid bb7. accept no substitues. even if you have no disc tab in the back, you're front fork most likely has tabs to run one...... if you only have a disc tab in front, i'd stick with the mech vs. hydro, so that you can dial in similar lever feels. having a cable brake and a hydro brake together makes for annoyance at the bar when braking, in my opinion.

if hydros, if budget and performance together are a requirement, go for the juicy-5 setup. despite what someone said above, not too much brake at all. go for the 160mm, unless you're a big guy, then go for the 185mm up front maybe.

though you can't really go wrong with some of the hayes mags, either.

Avid bb5? Apparently just as good as the bb7, just cant adjust the one pad right?

nooooooo! i urge people to run from the bb5....... yeah, one movable, and one staionary pad. BUT. the big difference to me, is that they take totally different pads than the other avid disc brakes. the bb7 and juicys all use the same pads. the bb5 uses a different pad, that many places don't/won't have. much nicer having a brakeset that is easy to get pads at nearly any decent shop.

the other aspect to this is that part of what has made the bb7 so great is the ease of feel adjustability. you lose a lot of that by only being able to adjust one pad. spend the extra few bucks to stick with the bb7 setup, and good full housing runs from lever to caliper, and you'll have a better brake than any other mechanical disc out there.

(disclaimer: i just recently swapped both my bikes out from bb7 setups to juicy-5 stuff. after being a loooooongtime lover of the mechanicals, i can say the juicys kick @ss all over them. love them. i'd not go back to mechanicals unless i had no other option.)

The new bike im looking at has the bb5's which is one of the reasons im looking at it over another pick that only have the hayes mx-2.

All of a sudden, i dont know why im looking at the better bike :eek:

i'd still go for the bb5 over the hayes. avid designed the bb5 to get more OEM spec on factory bikes (or so it appears).....in direct competition with the hayes/shimano/tektro lower end mech disc brake market.

even if the bb5 isn't a bb7, i'd still take it over any of the other mechanical discs out there.

I guess its just another case of get the best you can afford now, and upgrade later.

sorry to be a pain in the rear end. but its really anoying me people saying "OEM" wot the hell does it mean! i seen it around loads i keep thinkings its like stand alone or all rounder or something like this. please let me know!

OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer.

OE stands for Original Equipment - what comes on the bike from the factory.

OEM may or may not be OE.

Edit: An example, to clarify: Hayes is an OEM for my bike, Hayes Nines were OE. I've since swapped those for El Caminos, which are OEM but not OE.

The Instinct does have tabs on both the front and rear.

Thanks a lot for the imput, sounds like a set of bb7's are the way to go.

Then all you have to do is get some disc wheels (assuming you don't already have a set that can accept a rotor), and some BB7's then you're good to go.

PricePoint seems to have the best price on the BB7s...$75/ea right now.
