Crack!!!
I asked for advise on a frame in this forum, DON'T buy dual unless you can spend some serious money. GO HARDTRAIL I was told.
I ignored the advise and here's what I got.
Got to start listening!!!

What frame was that and what did it take to break it?

It's a mongoose massif. I bought the bike in Nov, proabably road it 10 times. Frame started making creaking noises after the third ride. As far was what I did, I just road it. Never once had more then one wheel off the ground. Never wrecked, and I never threw it as I usually do my old chain sucking hard tail. Sure i ride single track and bump over deadfall and stuff.
I started to disasemble it but the crank bolts are seized no amount of force can loosen them. It's been a pretty screwy deal. The original shock was bad. I was constantly bashing the pedals on the stuff the bb set so low. It bobbed like crazy when applying any power. I'll be glad to be through with it!

Still kicking.
If that doesn't work, duct tape will fix it.

"defect in manufacturing &/or material" - YES!!!!!
I would think just the weld would crack, but the tube cracked also.
I'm guessing to much heat was applied to the tube during the welding process.
How far was the seat post inserted into the frame? Any special instructions about seat post length?
How much you weigh?

meh, it's not just lower cost bikes that break. i've seen plenty of high dollar frames crack as well; frames that weren't abused.
if mongoose won't help you out, save up for a nicer frame, and swap your parts. then proceed to upgrade/replace other things as the break/wear out. or whatever.

Looks like they tried to gusset it, but didn't go high enough. If you had bottomed out the shock, that will start to apply force upward on that tube, with some added leverage. $800 is just not enough for a full suspension, or hardtail for that matter. Just get some duct tape and bondo.

If you paid $600 for a new Mongoose from an authorized dealer, the bike should certainly be in the warranty period. Providing you did not use the bike in a manner that violates the warranty conditions, you should be able to have the bike repaired at no cost to you. Your description of your riding certainly does not sound like it would be considered abuse, so you should return the bike to the dealer (if local) for repair.
If you bought the bike online, then you should contact the seller and ask how to proceed with a warranty repair. If your seller is unavailable, then you should contact Mangoose directly to arrange for service.
A bike that fails under normal riding withing three months is obviously defective. All manufacturers have some defective products go out the door. That's why they offer warranties.

From looking at your first picture, it seems like the mongoose doesn't have very much rear travel. Did you hit the portion of the suspension above the rear wheel (no idea what that's called) against the seat tube? That would definitely cause the crack...

Need some advise here.
This bike was apparently a second. Dealer was going to replace the frame for me himself. He needed some time to pick something up. Since I wasn't going to have much control over what he could get and I really want to steer clear of Mongoose. I worked out a deal to keep the parts.
Now on to a new a frame. There is a dude who has a Trek Fuel and a Trek Liquid for sale. Both front triangles have been broken and replaced with updated 2005 editons which at least appear to be stronger. These new front triangles have never been road. I can get either one, or neither one.
Anyone got an opinion on these bikes, I am strongly thinking about the Liquid because it has a more laid back geometry which suits my riding style.
