Well, I live out in the country and my house is quite far off of the road behind a hill. I keep it outside, under my front canopy unlocked. However, when in Dallas, I kept my xmart Schwinn locked with a ulock. I left it unlocked one night, and it was gone in the morning.

Front wheel off and placed beside the rear, U-lock through both wheels, chainstay or seatstay, around handy post. This makes it a little tougher to pry/jimmy the lock, and you won't get the wheels as easily. If you place your front wheel beside the back wheel on the drive side, it makes it a little harder to pilfer the rear der. No lock or locking technique is foolproof - if somebody wants it bad enough, they're gonna get it...

I used to live in areas where this was a concern. pinkrobe has the system down - works almost as well as keeping my bikes in Central Pennsylvania does.

Either:
Inside
Between my legs
Locked to the top of my truck (yakima roof system w/ locks)
If none of the above are available - two combonation cable locks. going through both wheels and the frame.

I've got a tioga cable lock. Cheap as, but I loop it through the front wheel and frame and then chain it to the bike cage at work. Oh and it helps that the cage is in an underground security carpark which requires access cards.

I've had my bike stolen off of the porch when I was inside 20 feet away on BikeForums. From that I learned a lesson. All three of my bikes are now in my bedroom locked to their rack. When I take my bike out, it is never unattended. But if for some reason it needs to be, I use my OnGuard Beast Chain.

I use a On Guard Doberman 5027 coil cable with bracket. I haven't used it much, but its always good to have one. Most of my friends don't use locks, but you can never be too safe.

Bikes hang in the garage; the two expensive bikes are chained (Krypto lock and 3/4" cable) to overhead beams. Guess the other four are bait...

My Bikes are kept in a garage, but only one is worth stealing. When I'm on a trail or path I usually have one or both of my 6 foot, 200+ lb sons with me. Funny thing, no one wants to try to take a bike when they're around.

Pinkrobe: That is how I lock mine and have never had any issues with it. By having the bike parallel with the rack people can not tamper with it nearly as easy. Last year on campus it seemed as if there was an epidemic of bike vandalism. Bikes that were hooked on the rack with cable locks were knocked flat to the ground and the wheels were tacoed. Some people just need to find new ways to have fun.

I use a chain and lock purchased from the hardware store. It is about the size of a 700 x 28c inner tube, and it is house within this inner tube also. It is 6 feet 6 inches in length and a bit heavy, but not a problem as I can feel to some degree secure that it will be there when I return.

I saw a vid a while back about older style u-locks being opening with a bic pen. It seemed that the empty barrel of a bic was the same diameter as the key and if you shoved it into the key hole the plastic would take the shape of the key allowing you to open the lock. I wish I could find it. It was really quite intersting and quite scary at the same time. I think Kryptonite recalled the older locks since then

I keep mine in my apartment. If someone gets in to steal my bikes, they'll steal my other stuff too. As far as riding them outside, when I ride around in the city, I carry a Master Lock "Big-A** Hardened Chain" type lock with a flat key. If I'm out at the trail, I'll just lean it against a tree or something while I fill my water bottles just like everyone else does. The trail is in such a location that there are either a lot of people watching the bikes or there is nobody around for miles to steal them.
