Stock Rockhopper Weight?

Hi There,

How accurate are digital bath room scales? As I weighed my bike using my bathroom scales and I got a reading of 32lbs for my Rockhopper Disk 05. Prior to me buying my bike two LBS told me the Rockhopper weighed in the region of 28lbs. Are my bathroom scales incorrect? Or is the LBS telling a porky? As 4lbs is quite a weight to be out by. Has anyone on this board got a Rockhopper Disk 05 they could weight to clarify?

Cheers,

Danny

My non-disc 04 Rockhopper (when unmodified) was around 30lbs on a digital bathroom scale so with the stock disc setup, I wouldn't be surprised at a 32lb reading.

bathroom scales are really in-accurate at low weights.

Im guessing he stood on it holding the bike and then subtracted his weight.

I think you'd be hard pressed to get a reading off of just a bike with a bathroom scale...I didn't weigh the bike by itself. Weigh yourself a couple of times, then weigh yourself with the bike a couple of times...the difference equals the approximate weight of the bike. It's not extremely accurate but it gets you close enough.

And published manufacturer's weights are known to be off...even when they have the weight marked on the part. So I wouldn't rely too much on what bike shop employees tell you for weights either, unless they actually recently weighed one. If you really want to know the exact weight, take it to a bike shop that has a bike scale. But chances are good that it will be 30-32lbs.

yeah, thats a good method.

I found out about the bathroom scales being very innaccurate when i was super drunk one day and i was weighing a pizza that was supposed to be 10lbs. This thing was soooo heavy! Didnt even register on the scale though. You ever heard of verns pizza there in calgary?

i've got one also. stock w/ the exception of new grips, pedals, and saddle. its definitely not light, so 32lbs wouldn't surprise me. i'll do the scale thing tonight and see what i get.

I've got an '04 rockhopper pro disc that I think was about 31 pounds stock, and now with new tires, seat, and seatpost, I got it down to 29.4 according to my bathroom scale. 32 pounds doesn't sound too unreasonable, but 28 seems a pretty light to me for a stock rockhopper.

Ok let me know what reading you get. I just swapped my stock saddle for a Selle Italia SLR 135G. Weighed my bike scale method before and after and the bike weight stayed the same. I wasn't looking for a big difference but there was a 300G difference between the two saddles. I don't give a **** anymore. I'm still going to get my RS Reba forks and new wheelset.

300g is less than a pound so you likely won't notice a difference with a bathroom scale.
