Me Want Big Tires!
Ok I recently saw a Surly Pugsly at my lbs and I was like wow! Look at those tires. But I can not afford a Pugsly. I have a trek 6700 right now and I was wondering what the widest tires I can put on it are. I was wwondering if I could go in the 2.5 or even 3.0 range. I have bontrager select rims.

I think 2.5 would be the limit for the back maybe 2.2 in the front depending on what fork you have...
the limit for me is 2.2 in front and about 2.4 in back and I have a hardrock pro
good luck

not sure what will fit in the back of your trek but.....
my fav tires in the large sizes have been :
Panaracer Fire FR 2.4"
IRC Trailbear 2.5"
Maxxis Mobster 2.5" (though it's a full DH tire, and much heavier than the others.
Kenda Blue Groove 2.5"
and Specialized has some tires in the 2.2-2.5 range that have worked pretty nicley for me, without being tanklike heavy, either.
many, many options out there. go to whatever local shops you have, and see what they have that'll fit. don't buy online until you know what'll fit your frame, or you may end up stuck with tires that won't work. well, ytou could likely use them on your front end at least.

Experiment first with slightly wider tires and low air pressure first. I was hoping to get som 2.5's until I tried some 2.25's with low low pressure. They track like crazy, they suck up bumps, and they're significantly harder to accerrate. I coulod air them up, but then I wouldn't be getting alot of the benefit of big tires. I'm happy with this width and now have no wish to go wider.
Anyhow, that's just me. I'm not suggesting not to go wide, I'm just suggesting to try an intermediate step up first.

On my Surly Pugsley I have a road setup ( 29er 2.35 Big Apples on 44mm wide SnoCat off-set wheelset by Wildfire Designs Bicycles) and a snow/sand setup with 26x4.0's.

Still kicking.
I actually like that bike better in the 29er setup.

I doubt you'll get more than a 2.3 on the rear of your trek. The front should probably go up to 2.5.

I was about to go searching for a set of those huge tyres somewhere in the UK for my Raleigh but then remembered that my V-Brakes probably wouldn't work with them.

The 2.5's will only fit on the front. My brother has a Trek 4100, and we couldn't get a very large tire in the rear. I had a 2.6 inch tire on my Marzocchi Mz-comp(it measured larger than 2.6 though.). I have it on my New Z1 fork, and it rubs. The Z1 is rated for up to a 2.8 inch tire. The front wheel is perfectly true. It rubs very slightly, so I just pulled off some of the outer treads.

Not sure how close our frames are dimension-wise, but the biggest I've run in the back on my Fuel are 2.3's, and those rubbed the chainstays when I ran them at higher pressures.
