Shimano VS Sram

For mtb components.

Maelstrom 11-05-02 12:04 AM

Shimano drive train, Sachs chain. I can't stand grip shift. :)

KleinRider 11-05-02 09:06 AM

mmmm....I love my grip shifts! I have the x-rays (yes, old) and absolutely love them.

a2psyklnut 11-05-02 09:49 AM

Either way!

Right now I'm running XTR, so I voted Shimano. But, the new Sram XO stuff is sweeeeeeetttttt!

When Gripshift first came out I didn't like it because I test rode a bike and shifted while bunny hopping a curb. Almost crashed a new bike and swore alliegence to Shimano. Lo and behold had a opportunity to get a great deal on a new bike that had Gripshift on it and swapping out wasn't an option. Tried it out, got used to it and loved it! I really like GS for microadjusting the front derailleur. Never had a problem and swore I wouldn't switch back. Guess what? Yep, next bike had XT Shifters and XTR Rear derailleur.

To me it's no big deal either way. Takes a few minutes to retrain your brain to doing it the other way. I would say that Gripshift is easier to get used to.

I prefer SRAM to Shimano shifters. This may be a little off; I also prefer Avid brakes to Shimano. I like Shimano derailleurs.

WorldIRC 11-05-02 03:54 PM

xtr guppo.. sachs chain. for mtb of course.

dirtbikedude 11-05-02 05:39 PM

I voted Shimano, I do not like gs either. SRAM does make good quality components.

I small hands, so sram shifters seemed a little big to hang onto..
but it was a very short test ride...
I miss my SRAM chain, esp. when it comes time to clean it!

Maelstrom 11-05-02 10:33 PM

Does the sram / sachs chain fit on shimano rings. At least this is something I was told.

palooka 11-05-02 10:34 PM

Shimano. Just like the feel of their shifters, and their derailers work fine for me.

Avid V's all the way! :) Simpler, lighter, better looking IMO.

Scooby Snax 11-06-02 06:18 PM

Yes Maelstrom, you can use a Sachs / SRAM / Shimano chains interchangeably.

(MEC has well priced SRAM / sachs chains, and shipping is free....)

Maelstrom 11-06-02 08:03 PM

Yeah I thought so.

Mec has a lot of cheap stuff. I am finding a lot of useful things there almost half price of my bike shops :)

WorldIRC 11-06-02 09:16 PM

thats because MEC buys a lot more chains and little bike accessories then some of the shops do. More they buy the cheaper they pay, the cheaper they can sell it for.

Dannihilator 11-06-02 09:57 PM

Chain wise, Sram.

Dirtgrinder 11-06-02 11:05 PM

Shimano shifters. Hate grip shift. Cassette and chain I always use SRAM.

Richard D 11-07-02 08:40 AM

SRAM 9 V-brakes :)
