Exposed Seatpost
I am curious if ~10 inches of exposed seatpost would be considered acceptable. The seatpost would be within the guidelines of the minimun insertion mark on the seatpost. Coming over from the darkside (read road) it just seems to be an extreme amount of post showing. I am building up a Trek Fuel and am going with a smaller frame due to standover numbers, etc.
What amount of seatpost do you have exposed? Thanks! |
I'm not exactly sure how much I have exposed but it is quite a bit. I have no problems with it. Long seatposts are pretty much standard with compact frames.

Long seatposts bend easier, so you may want to spend a bit more $ on your post to reduce the chances of this happening. But I'm 5'11 and rode a 13" frame exclusively in the late 90s, including long road rides, requiring a real long post. No problem.

Long seatposts are great! The bending action adds a little sproing under the saddle which is always nice for recreational riding.
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e3...ohn/befork.jpg Mine's a Raceface Evolve XC. It's lite and strong, but has a little give. On the other hand, I'm only 140 pounds. My frined is 210 so he uses a nice strong Thompson seatpost for an extra measure of security. |
I just measured mine, it's right 9 3/4". I have always used a Thomson Elite on it and never had a problem. I recently switched to a Thomson Masterpiece though.

I think Thomson seatposts are it. Pricey but excellent. For a better deal go to

Mine is exactly 10" exposed, measured from the clamp. I haven't had any problems either.

Thanks for all the input. The current seatpost is a Bontrager Select 400mm. Good enough to start with? Or should I upgrade from the start?

Oh you guys, showing off those super slick XC rides.Hey Lowcel,I see you have food and water bowls for your ride.

don't sweat it. like everyone else said, so long as you don't exceed the minimum mark, it should be ok. a decent (read: not stupid light) post should be fine. it can be more of an issue on frames with slacker seattubes, just by the nature of the stresses placed on them vs. a steeper angle.
i've got a lot of post showing on both my bikes. no problems. and on my roadie as well. |
