24" wheels
Could anyone tell what is the point of having 24" wheels? Advantages, disadvantages anything I should know if I were to buy some 24" inch rims?

i beleive faster acceleration, but harder to keep up the speed...maybe. Also you wont be able to roll over as much stuff as you would be able to with bigger wheels.

As far as I know... they're more of a freeride & downhill phenomenon. The huckers like them because they're really strong, and can accept mad-big tires. Everything I've learned about them so far is as follows:
Advantages:
Disadvantages:
Advantages:
- Strong
- Beefy
- Can accept huge tires
- Shorter spokes = less flex
- faster acceleration
- a more slack angle of the entire bike
- Shorter wheelbase (easier to Manuever)
Disadvantages:
- Slower top speed
- Harder to find tires for (1.95-2.1" widths I mean)
- Usually a little heavier
- Can ONLY run discs (on standard frames)
- Harder to match to a frame built specifically for 26" wheels

The only thing I would add to BigHit's list is the fact that they will also lower your bottom bracket hight and you will need to run a bash guard to prevent destroying your chainrings. This will also cause you to keep your cranks flat or always have the inside crank in the 12 o'clock position to prevent it from hitting the ground.

a 24" Sun Mammoth built on a XT disc hub with 14ga spokes is lighter than a 26" Sun Mammoth with the same hub and spokes.
Smaller rim and shorter spokes equal less weight.

Kevin, what about the tire weight, I thought the advantage to 24" wheels was the ability to run 3" tires. The overall circumference of a 3" tire on a 24" rim is very close to a 2.2" tire on a 26" rim, no?

24" Sun Doubletrack with a 2.7 Arrow prime bite, DH thick tube, XT Hub, 8" avid rotors, 14ga spokes Sram 9.0 cassette and a XT quick release on the rear.
26" Sun Doubletrack with a 2.5 Arrow prime bite, DH thick tube, Formula 20mm hub w/Marzocchi QR20 axle and quick release, 8" Avid rotors and 14ga spokes.
The rear is lighter than the front. But I was just talking about the wheels not the tires.
