planning to upgrade a trek 4600
I have a trek 4600 that has most of its shifting components shot, I think! I am pretty new to parts and bike stuff so I really don't know. The derailleur is a Sram X-7 and for some reason does not shift well, has been bent and I would like to replace it. I was wanting a price range on what it would cost to replace the chain, front and rear cranks, and the derailleur. I want close to top of the line parts but don't really care on the brand of parts.

The two brands for components are SRAM and Shimano. SRAM's top of the line is X.0 followed by X.9. X0 is overkill unless you are racing, plus the 06 rear derailleur is like $235. '05 X9 rear derailleur is about $70.
For Shimano the highest is XTR followed by XT. XTR rear derailleur will run you about $135. XT will run you about $65.
Which one should you choose? Personal preference my friend. Some people prefer SRAM, some Shimano.
As for chains, a good chain will run you about $50.
While you are updating your whole drivetrain, you should replace your casette as well. I would go to a 9 spd since most parts these days are coming in 9 spd rather than 8. Casettes will be around $70ish, depending what quality you get.
There is a lot to think about when upgrading your drivetrain
Oh, you might as well replace your shifters as well. New shifters are like butter!!!!!!!!!
Good luck

First off, have had your drive train properly tuned?
Unless you are really concerned with weight, I would replace the parts on your 4600 with the same parts you have now. A lot of people I know have some sort of problem with chain suck, throwing chains, binding etc. I have never had any problems with the setup on my 4600. Trek really nailed it with this drivetrain setup. Too bad they don't make it anymore.

my bad like I said I am new to this and when I meant the crankset and the cassette. I think I will go with sram '05 X9 rear derailleur and for the crankset ans cassette I am not sure since there are so many, are they good to buy used or should you buy them brand new? also what types would you recommend, I am looking for both in the 150 dollar range.

How old is your bike? Has it ever had any maintenance? Are you sure the derailleur is bent? Get the hanger checked at a bike shop. Also, replace your cables and housing, put a new chain on it, lube and tune everything and I bet most of your shifting issues will be resolved.
I wouldn't recommend upgrading all of the parts you have listed unless:
- someone with more experience has identified the problem(s)
- you understand why you are upgrading (i.e., what the component does) and know if it will help or not
- you have money you want to get rid of
