Rear Air or Coil Suspension?

I personally don't like a air suspension. What are your guys thoughts on them?

I wouldn't use air for jumps and drops etc. Coil would be the way to go. I'd say if your a XC racer for instance, then air would be the better choice as it would be lighter. Personally I would use coil for freeride and DH, maybe all mountain and air for XC to agressive XC. I pretty much like both, but I would go with air since I'm an XCer.

I think Fox brought out a DH Air shock and not many people like it.

air suspension? Its great. YOu have a a huge range of adjustibility.
Think about a fork for a minute. You have to buy springs according to your weight, and of course factor in riding styles/conditions. With my SID (air), all I would have to do is pump a little more in with my shock pump if I gained weight. When I commute, i pump it up and put on the lockout. Then I can manipulate it again for when i hit the trails, air is the way to go in my opinion

Its like comparing apples and oranges. They are both good. I like the feel of a coil better but an air shock is great for those that like that feel as well.

air has a different spring action. They seem to get pretty stiff down near the end of the spring travel. Coils usually stay more linear through their travel. Can't blow out coils.

I actually voted for air suspension. Air shocks and forks have really improved in number over the past few years durability wise. The 2006 Boxxer World Cup is air sprung.

I'll get an air sprung suspension when i get my FS (whenever that is). As phantomcow said, the range of adjustability is nice. Plus im not heavy enough to have to worry about the wear and tear on an air shock to warrent getting a coil.

Nobody's mention the third option - - and IMHO the best of both worlds - - coil with air assist. Gives you all of the good qualities of coil with the bottomlessness of air.
