Its like a bandana. And no, I don't think I have seen many mtbikers wear them. Some of the bald ones do under full face however. Different application than the way roadies do it

only when its below 20f or above 90f.they keep my head warm in cold and wick sweat better when its real hot and humid. I have a dowrap stubby for cold and a headsweats classic for hot. they kick a$$ in the extreme heat. I rode with a couple of U.S.marines( they were the only ones crazy enough to do it) last summer when the actual temp was 104 in the shade and humidity was about as high and did fine with it and yet was getting sweat in my eyes badly and getting overheated more in low 90s temps without it on previous rides. they were the ones who told me about it. before meeting the Iraq war vets I used one only in cold weather. the headsweats wicks MUCH better than the dowrap eve though they are both coolmax. the classic fits looser for better air movement

I wear a Garneau Skull cap when it's cold (35-45 F). $14 retail. But I have real short hair and my head gets chilly. Wear it mostly on the road, and I have another one thats totally windproof for when it gets really cold (<35 F)

I wear one when I'm going to be sweating a lot. I hate sweat dripping onto my glasses.

Below -20C or so. Full-face is toatsy warm otherwise in the winter.
As for wearing these types of things in the summer, I've never really gotten that. Maybe prevents sunburn through vents.

I wear one especially at DH races on real sunny days. I found out that I spent much of the day without the helmet on (shuttle, pits, staging, etc.) and the 'follicly-challenged' top of my head took a beating. The CoolmMax Headsweats work good and don't interfere with the fit of the helmet.

Just bought a skull cap at the weekend as it's been a bit chilly. Got a Buff for around my neck and face too if it's really cold.
