I positively love and admire horses. My bike got me a special adhoc invitation to to get next to the Budweiser Clydesdales when they were in Homestead last year.

Yeah, some horse owners are a little attitudinal. I can't fault the animal or their owners for wanting to get out of the barn.

My limited experiences with horses on trails tells me that they are not all that damaging. It may be the gifts they leave that causes most concern.

Lucky you. They absolutely decimate our trails, especially in high numbers when it's wet and muddy (like when the trails are closed and everyone else is kind enough to refrain from using them).

That would have annoyed the hell out of me too!

If the sign said trail closed I would have definately;

1. Taken pictures to give to the local town or park department
2. Seen if I could have located local park police or code enforcement and informed them
3. Got out of my car and talked to the horsers about trail responsibility ( I know they would have laughed me off and told me MTBer's cause 10x the damage that they do)
4. Written down licenses plates on the cars /trailers to report to the local police/ code enforcement

Horses tick me off to because they destroy the thin topsoil layer on my local trail. Eventually turning them to sand. every year another section of trail turns to dust

So I'm with you on this one.
Couldn't have said it better (although in my case there's no allergy).

cydewaze: I don't think it's something stupid to get annoyed at at all, you should've spooked the horses.
I do hope no one took spooking the horses seriously

Your dog!? How about cheval or carne de equine (French & Italian respectively). When you see a shop that looks like it might be a butcher shop and has a horse sign in the window...it is.

My Swiss friend ordered cheval for me. He said, "Just tell yourself it's beef." It was ok, little dry, but hey, wadda you gonna do?
