Nope. Kind of like a hybrid bike, there's no solution that works equally well for both situations.

yeah, or SUV's. The worst of both worlds...the crappy handling of trucks and small cargo space of cars. Well my old S-10 is atleast.

some combo's are the crankbrothers mallets or shimano's dx clipless's. I feel like time makes one but I don't know what it's called. I've never used any of them, but I'd imagine they could be real nice to have sometimes but real crappy others.

Why are they called clipless pedals? Shouldn't they be CLIP? If "clipless" are called clipless pedals, what are clip pedals? Damn, I'm so confused.

And by the way, what does COMP mean? I see it a lot on frames and suspensions (Marzocchi MX Comp, Rockhopper Comp, Response Comp, etc, etc)

You are thinking of the Time ATAC Z pedals which appear to be highly rated by mtbr alcahueteria. They come in two types, the Z and Z control - the differences are purely cosmetic. I too was looking at the platform/clipless combo for my first set of clipless because my bike is also my commuter to campus and I dont want to have to wear bike shoes to get to school. Keep in mind that the clipless portion extends up above the platform in the middle of the pedal. I hear this can be uncomfortable and create problems with grip when not clipped in. But, I think they should be ok for short rides or those portions of the trail where you are just not quite confident to go it clipped in.

In the end I decided to stick with my platforms for a few more months until I am more skilled with biking on platforms before I transition to clipless.

Note, I have no personal experiance with clipless pedals. This is just a distillation of my own research and conversations.

They make platform clip ins for SPD pedals. I would try that if you want to quickly convert from SPD to a pedal for regular shoes. Nashbar sells some.

Chone: They are called clipless because they do not have a toe clip. By toe clip I mean a piece of plastic or metal that extends from the pedal and holds your foot in place. Clipless pedals use a cleat and some binding mechanism (think ski boot).

COMP, I think, is just short for "competition" and likely means nothing outside of marketing.

These came with my bike:

Haven't had any problems with them (except for the learning curve).
