i would chose the candy's, 4 sided entry, will still shed mud pretty easilly, and have a wee bit of a platform if im ever riding without clipless shoes..

Not true, the platform is likely indestructable but the axel is far from it. I've polished off 3. Crank Brothers has sent me new ones quickly. They even sent me doubles last time so I wouldn't have to wait for new axels if another one broke.

Still the Mallet is a great pedal and if you don't weigh 280# like I do, you probably will have less problems with the axel braking.

I've used both the time and the eggbeaters. From my experience I liked the eggbeaters much more. The 4-sided entry was nice, but I really liked the feeling of them when I was clipped in compared to the times. As for the different eggbeater models that depends on your intended use, and if a platform would really be beneficial to you. For me it wasn't but I'm pretty strictly an xc rider so a platform won't do anything for me.

I'm also shopping for clipless pedals and have decided to get the Candy's. But my question is, do you think its worth 40 bucks more to get the sl's at ~$100 or just get the c's at ~$60?

Accord ing to Crank Brothers website the only difference between the Candy C's and the SL's is 14 grams and the C's have a chromoly spindle insted of a stainless steel one so if it were me I'd probably go with the C's and save the $40.

I just started riding with the Crank Bros Candy C pedals. Can the cleats be modified slightly so that I can get out of clips quicker? Guess I still haven't got the confidence and skill to ride up the technical stuff as easily as I want and I would like to be able to bail quickly, lol? Thanks,

Definitely the egg beaters. I have two sets of the egg beaters and one set of the candy's. I just removed the candy's from my bike last night. I don't really need the platform.

As for are the stainless worth the extra $40 that is up to you. To me they are, I hate seeing the surface rust on the spindles of the c's.

I got a set of candies. The sl are worth the $40 extra. The rust prevention alone is worth that if you ride in wet evirons.

I am going to get some egg beaters - I hv shimano & in a muddy race last weekend they were absolutely full with crap - got to the point where I cud barely clip in....

egg beaters the shimanos are horrible in mud. but i preffer not to ride in mud so i dont really care.

if you dont race i would say the candy or if you dont really care about weight that much

I have the XS carbon and they have taken a terrific beating and I have had NO problems at all. Ive heard the eggbeaters dont do well in spectacular crashes. I couldnt tell you how many times they have hit something with the pedals, like rocks or wooden bridges, while pedaling and hit it hard enough to change my direction of travel as well as when I crash and they are only slightly scratched. I moved up from the Alium to them and both excell off road. after a few rides the cleats loosen up to the point of very easy exit BUT the harder you pull up the tighter the engagement, which is nice for pulling up while pedaling yet the looseness while not pulling, like in the area between "oh" and "pooh" of an up coming crash, makes disengaging very quick and easy to the point of not even thinking about it

Make sure you have the cleats installed where it only takes 15 degrees of rotation to unclip. If you install them the other way it takes 20 degrees of rotation to unclip. One cleat is going to have two dots on it and the other cleat will have one. I don't remember which goes on which side for the fifteen degrees. Also, as they break in they get much easier to unclip.

Rey, thanks! The cleats with dots go on the right side to reduce amount of outward rotation to disengage the clips. You are right, seems like I am able to get out of clips easier now as the cleats wear in. Still tempted to file on the cleats, tho, to allow me to get out of them quicker, lol.

You can cheat on the release angle by pointing the cleat towards your big toe.

I don't know about that guy who says that egg beaters are lousy in mud. They work just fine for me and every report I've read to date indicates that Time and Egg Beaters are the only choice under those circumstances.

Don't spend $100 on the SL. They're consistently up for sale, brand new in the box, for $70-80, often with free shipping. I got both my sets of Candy SLs from eBay (from highly ranked sellers with feedback in the thousands). If you really want to spend $100, you can often get the Candy Ti for about $110.

I use the Candy pedals and like them a lot. I choose them over the Eggbeaters because I use a recreational-type shoe with a less stiff sole, so the platform is nice.

If I am reading your question right, here they are from left to right starting at the top. Time ATAC's, Crank Brothers's Candy's, Crankbrother's Eggbeater's, and the one's on the bottom are Crankbrother's Mallet's.

put a little axle grease on the cleat, get them dirty and friction will wear them in quicker. you dont have to worry about filing too much that way
