20mm axle question

I posted my question about my building a Bullit from the frame up (on a couple forums, thanks btw). I found a deal on a set of wheels with XT hubs that several reccomended, but my question is this: Do I have to have a 20mm axle hub for, say a Super T or White Bro DH3? Maybe I should ask like this: Can I take the wheels off my Rock Shox SID race fork and put it on a 20mm thru axle type fork (as in a Zoc Super T)?

I know this may seem to be a lame question, but also what about on the back of the Bullit, do I need a special hub for this too or will any old wheel fit? I am buying a new wheelset but this will help me to not order the wrong stuff.

All the hubs I see in nasbar, performance, or supergo are either 9mm or 11mm axles. Am I making this too complicated?

Thanks!

For a Super T or WB DH3 you will need a 20mm hub. A standard QR hub wont work.
You will how ever be able to use a regular hub on the rear.

Yeah, what he said!

I will add that the 20 mm makes the front end soooooo stiff, it's amazing. I'll probably never be able to go back to a standard front hub. I'm spoiled now, and won't go back! You can't make me! No! No! No!

As K.G. mentioned, for those forks you will need a 20mm hub. If you want a set of xc wheels and a set of dh/fr wheels you will have to get 2 front wheels.
I may be wrong on this one but I believe that Shimano does not make a 20mm hub. If you want to keep the price down you could get a Ringle 20mm for around $70 or you could spend a bit extra and get a Chris King ISO 20mm for about $125. And if you spend a little more you could get a Hadley 20mm for about $150.

If the bullit has a 12mm through axel in the back you will need a hub for that as well. I would suggest getting a set of Ringle Hubs front and rear. Most bikes that have a 12mm through axel come with a hub when you buy them new.
I recomend the Ringle because they are not as exspensive and they hold up well.

Performance, SuperGo and nashbar mostlikely will not have what you need.

If you want to go the mail order route(yuck, I said mail order:( ),
check out Go-Ride.Com.
Scott Crabill the owner is a super nice guy and a downhill racer.
Krispy Baughman of video fame works there also.

I figured I would have to buy a 20mm hub, but I have been told that Shimano does not make one. Actually I've been told that at a couple places, but I sent a list of parts to my local shop and they told me that there is a XT 20mm hub. They gave me a good price on a wheelset too, but I need to find out for sure before I have him order it. Maybe I'll check Shimano's web site. Thanks guys...

I misunderstood. Just talked to my dealer and he told me the fork comes with a hub and they would use that, apparently the XT does not come in 20mm. He also said DH stuff is not in performance, nashbar, etc because DH is "not mainstream" enough. I wish he hadn't said that, I have always strived to be "not mainstream". I think this is gonna be fun...

OKMikeOK,

You really can't tease us like that! You have a list of parts you want and you haven't shared them with us? What's up with that?

C'mon dude, post the list of goodies!

He's going to weld a steel rod where the rear shock goes, put on a cro-mo fork, a pink metal flake banana seat w/a sissybar and some ape hangers with pink and green tassels and run 20" wheels.:p

haha! I had one about like that when I was a kiddo...

I need for sure:

-wheelset
-brakes
-fork
-one of those sexy Ti MX style bars
-probably will need a seatpost if one in the stack in the shop won't fit

And I still need my FRAME! Should be here in a week or so. I'm not buying anything 'til it gets here, but that has given me time to ask alot of questions and get my parts list ironed out. A couple things I have pretty well settled on is a Super T fork and I like those high-dollar Chris King hubs. If I can't win a race at least I can dazzle the techno-junkies at the gate with all my doo-dads and shiny whirlin' metally things :)

Insted of using a Ti bar why not go with an Easton Scandium Dh bar? I have been using one and it has held up to some hard hits. It is very light and strong.

Wheelset:

and I like those high-dollar Chris King hubs.
Get the ISO Disc's, I'd lace those to a set of Mavic D321 rims or Atom Laboratories rims, using 14 gauge.

Brakes: I don't think you can wrong with any of the new brakes available right now. Hope, Hayes, Shimano,Magura's...etc. Of course my preference are Hayes.

Fork:

A couple things I have pretty well settled on is a Super T fork
Good Choice! Very nice fork and will go well with the Bullit!

Bar: The new Easton's are nice, Azonic also makes a great bar, and don't forget Answer.

Seatpost: Get a Thomson Elite. No other can compare for weight/strength/quality/ease of use! The two bolt system is great and you can get the seat in the exact angle you like. It's simple and strong!
