they are just different...

multi directional allow release by twisting and raising heel either direction - the standard ones only release by twisting heel outward & if you raise heel too much while twisting they will not release.

I just added multi directional cleats & I find them easier to release - actually now maybe too easy, they come out once or twice when I don't want...

i use crankbros eggs, and the multi directional cleats have saved me from some good amounts of pain...cause sometimes when u start to fall and u panic, haveing you hell come out either way on the pedal is a nice thing to have...ive only have had the bike alnd on me once and it hurt like hell, my one foot was still clipped in and the frame landed square on my knee...

even though they are diff. id go with multi directional, little safer in my mind.

oh and u can adjust some cleats so take less to come out, or more angle...depending.

woudn't it be more dangerous for your foot to come off the pedal at high speed than it not come off at low speed?

I agree with stretch & it was for saftey that I got multi release, they come out easier when yr stacking...

They will not come out at unwanted times if I pedal properly, just noticed other day when I got tired and my pedaling got a little raged I must have twisted and raised heel a little and it came out - I just need to focus on pedal stroke more when tired..

at high speed, my pedals have never popped off my feet, but at low speed when im trying to manuver and stuff, it is much easier for me to just click out when i need to, to aviod the falling with my biek stuck to me and the painfulness.

besides, multi dir. cleats and pedals also clip back in easier, and i noticed that with my eggs, its so easy to clip in so i can clip and unclip in a few seconds, and manage to save myself from falling and potentially hurting my self pretty bad.

I've not been able to find any mention of multi-dir eggbeater cleats on the web, nor is the lbs aware of them. How do you find them? I'm presently using the Shimano M55 multi-release cleats on Shimano pedals, but I'd like to try Eggbeaters.

Just remember that with Crank Brothers, the "other" side of the cleat requires 20º instead of 15º if your using the two dots on the right. And if you "cheat" like me by pointing the cleat inwards, it's even more.

Crank brothers are asymmetrically bi-directional ...

There are no "multi-direction" egg beater cleats. They just relase in two separate direction. The mechanism works by forcing the "beaters" apart an allowing the cleat to slip out.

Egg Beaters will NEVER release by pulling straight up (unless you have VERY, VERY, VERY worn cleats). The Egg Beater acts a bit like a Chinese finger trap in that the more you pull on it, the tighter the mechanism clamps down.

You can however get newer "special" egg-beater cleats with a harder brass alloy that doesn't wear so fast.

Thanks. I was jumping to the conclusion that they had a cleat that operated like the M55. I'll have to stick with SPD's.
