UK Press claim mountain biking deaths inevitable
 

Take a look at this. Taken from an article that first appeared in the UK Daily Mail on 24th May, 2001.

The British Journal of Sports Medicine yesterday published a report entitled "Mountain biking injuries in rural England", which is widely reported in the national press.

It's amazing how the media loves to over sensationalize everything in order to get people's attention.

It used to be that death was considered inevitable. In today's market-driven economy, that notion is out: God forbid the corporations should lose a CONSUMER.

Hence, everything has to be made perfectly safe, so that the maximum consumption can take place.

This virus apparently originated here in the US, but it's obviously spreading worldwide at a good clip.

Mountain biking deaths inevitable? That's news? Hey, guess what spankys, none of us are going to live forever anyway! Maybe I'll set up a website that claims "Sitting on @ss, getting fat deaths inevitable!" Hey, why not?

A friend is reading a book on the social/economic impacts of the bicycle in history. One of the things he mentioned was during the high wheeler era there were all sorts of doctors predicting a variety of aliments due to cycling:
· Bleeding gums from inhaling superheated air through the mouth
· Horrid foot deformities from pedaling
· Long term spinal problems from riding
I don't know the name of the book, but it sounds fascinating.

Time to go change the gauze in my mouth……

Like I've said before, if the bicycle were invented today, it would be promptly outlawed.

Maybe it's still not too late....

Does anyone remember when U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson
said that the automobile had killed more Americans than all wars
combined? Why isn't anything said about that anymore? Is it really because it's an acceptable level of risk? Or is it because the automobile is to be worshipped above all other forms of transportation?

I think the automobile is the single most destructive non-weapon
ever introduced on this planet. Who says it has to stay that way?
GM? Ford? Toyota? BMW? Well, we know who wants it to stay that way...

As far as bikes being dangerous, well, it wouldn't be safe for me to support such a viewpoint on BikeForums!

I can make some pretty good guesses why the dangers of automobiles are not emphasized anymore, and none of them are favorable to the portrait of legislators. Does "$" ring a bell?

Hey, you're able to read my mind from what, 12,000 miles away? Pretty good, Chris. ;)

There is going for a hike in the hills, and there is freeclimbing a granite wall. Both count as pedestrian activity, but one will get you killed if you make a mistake. It the same with extreme downhill riding, and going for a bike ride.

The press are a bunch of tossers. A while back, someone got lost walking in Lamington National Park (not far from here) and they wanted to close it and ban people from walking in there. I mean, this guy had no map, no compass and attempted a walk of 20km+. Maybe they should have left him there and let natural selection do it's thing.
