I'd have to agree with a statement above about just gettin a hitch extender and being done with it. A four bike rack that is fully loaded will probably weigh a max of 150, but lets call it 200 to be generous. A hitch extender generally reduced the load that it can take by 50%. I'd bet that you have a class 3 hitch on the rig, so 50% of about 5000 lbs is 2500 lbs that you would be reduced to. I'm sure that even 4 bikes on the extended hitch would be fine.

Of course it will be sort of an ugly solution...

My Yakima Roc n gate has 10 1/2 inches of clearance from the end of the reciever to the vertical bar. They don't make this model anymore but their Backswing 4 looks like it has the same basic frame.

You should have purchased a jeep cherokee, wrangler, gmc yukon, honda pilot, etc. Anything other than an H3 or H2. The only REAL Hummer is the H1 or the military humvee. Driving either the H2 or H3 just appears as if you are making up for somewhere else you are lacking.

Now to say something nice. Since you already have the H3, buy one of those roofracks that you see on the range rovers and discos that hold your spare tire on top. That will get it out of the way for the bike.

Throw the bike on the roof and use a rope. Stop treating the H3 like a Lexus and treat it like a mudder, SUV pansies....sheesh. 4x4's rock but this whole 'not really a 4x4' industry needs to be given minivans, it's what they really deserve.

Trafficjammer....you are so insensative! Why don't you know that Hummer drivers cannot take their ride off the highway, including gravel roads, and certainly not in the threat of rain/snow. My god man, suggesting that he put it on the top and risk a scratch? Dude, what were you thinking?? I mean when you drive the ultimate "shopping mall look at me ride" hanging a bike on top takes away from the Terminator wannabe image. Wonder if it is the rare "Exxon Guzzler" model?
Bike-Hummer: serious oxymoron.

Sorry I learned how to drive in a sand draggin 4x4.
SUV's with shopping basket bush guards drive me crazy, it was a ploy in the 70's to get soccer mom's into these things when they changed the cars' MPG rules, it didn't apply to trucks and then the marketing of the Scout to the soccer mom started.

4x4 don't use no chrome....scratches you know. Put a 5gal jerry can on the back, cut holes in the roof for the snorkel for river runs, and the light bar, lift kit. BIG assed mudder tyres.... woooohooooo.

Let's take this baby for a test flight out to the gravel pits.

ever see a pinzgauer? They come in 6x6 or 4x4. Snorkels on the intake and exaust allow them to go pretty much completely underwater. no chrome.

let me get this straight.... you cannot fit two bikes into the back of a $30k SUV?

YET, I can fit 4 bikes, two people, and enough camping gear for a week in Utah into the back of my Ford Focus ZX3 (two door hatch)...... THATS INSIDE!

What is the cubic feet of interior room on one of those?

If I had the dosh laying around, I'd just pick up a Unimog. Now -that's- a 4x4.
