In the market for a new hardtail

I'm in the market for a new hardtail for xc / general mountain biking around $800. I love lightweight and speed and don't need much suspension. I'd love the Stumpjumper but it's too pricey for me. I've looked at the Hardrock / Rockhoppers but they seem awfully heavy for a hardtail. The Hardrock was 36 lbs! (I'm comparing to my 8 year old GT Pantera rigid). I wanted to check out the Kona Cinder Cone (maybe the Caldera) but when I called the dealer I was informed that Kona has been dropped by them. I asked why and was told that in their opinon, Kona is cutting too many corners now. I'm not sure if this is the real story or a bunch of BS. Nonetheless, nobody in Austin, TX carrys Kona anymore (at least that I'm aware of).

I've been out of the loop for awhile and basing my search on past experience / knowledge, which is obviously way out of date. What other brands should I be looking at in my price range?

Thanks.

I'd recommend the Trk 6500 w/disc brakes.
You should be able to find it for about your price range.

i am not a Kona expart. but, in my opinion Kona still makes some decent hardtail. they are probably just adjusting to the rest of the competition these days. I believe, the new hardtail (XC series) tubing is a testament to that.

so, you will be safe with KONA.

Specialized makes some good bikes.

also, check out two brands that are not as popular but makes very decent bikes - K2 and Iron Horse.

I have recently rode a Iron Horse Warrior Expert, Really loved it. I also had a K2 Zed 4.0 (2005) that I really liked. K2 is very nimble and fast (if it means anything ot you). I also like their frames and the components that they put on it.

Finally, why not sticking with GT, Avalanche series or Someting close.

best of luck.

I've got a 2003 Jamis Exile, and I love it. You can get a 2005 for $855 online. Mine only weighs 25lbs and is a reynolds steel frame

allthough my hardtail is in the XC range it is more of a chunkier frame, as its more of an agressive frame and geo! still its unbelivable light and extreamly safe to ride!
