Newb clipless question
 

I'm thinking of looking at clipless pedals and I just had a quick question. When you have pedals like the Candy Bros. Egg Beaters with no platform at all can you feel that when you're riding? I'm just wondering if it feels like you don't have much to press down on or if it's uncomfortable pushing against something that small for a long time. They seem great for saving weight as well as the 4 sided entry but I wasn't sure if they felt a ton different than a platform would or something like the Mallet.

bike shoes have stiff soles so that the pressure doesn't transfer thru to your foot. You should be using a stiff soled shoe even if you don't have clipless pedals, at least for long distance riding.

I have not used the egg beaters, but I am using some Time ATAC Z pedals (my first clipless). They are great - the platform lets me easily use them with street shoes for the campus commute. The only downside to the platform is that you have more room to "miss" the mechanism. This happens less with practice, and still might happen with egg beaters, but I sometimes find my self searching for the proper place to put my foot to get clipped in. If the only place to put my foot down was also the clip, I think it would be easier.

Is the ability to ride without clipless the only/main advantage when using clipless with a platform then? Also does anyone know Time's website? I googled it and just found www.timesportusa.com and couldn't find mtb pedals. Maybe I just didn't see a link to click or something.

I think the platforms help me a bit on confidence and stability, but I wouldnt want to ride around off road unclipped for long. They arnt as grippy as my previous stock platforms. I mostly got them because of the fact that I commute to campus on my bike and dont want to have to walk around in bike shoes all the time.

i ride spds which dont really have a platform with sidi rampas. the shoe is stiff and it curves up towards the back of the shoe. it feels great. i dont think it will feel like you are missing anything at all.
