Just happened to me today. Is this common? I replaced the stem with an EA70 110mm.

I was powering up a hill on the road to the trail, standing and leaning into it and snap!!! It held together enough to get back to the car. I heard about another rider in my club who had the same thing happen. This is not really a crappy component either. I used it for about 14 months.

Chuck Norris would have repaired this by willing the metal to repair itself.

AKAIK, this sort of event only happens to Habs fans. At least, that is how it should be.

I take all of this abuse with pride. It shall be returned in full measure when the Habs actually do destroy all opposition.

That is unbelieveable. I can't imagine the force required to break that piece.

scandium is a really brittle alloy. Call up control tec and send them some pics with a link to this thread. You should get a new stem asap.

Go HABS Go! Carolina has got to stop crashing Huet! Every Carolina drive seems to end with a player getting up off Huet, while Ward never gets hit. We need to get AK-27 to lay down a few hits.

Oh, and re: the stem:

It might also be a counterfeit stem, not subject to control tech's quality control practices. Just a thought...

Why would someone go through the trouble of exactly replicating a stem? Dude, easier on the bars, put more power through your legs. By the looks of the crack, you were pushing down with your right hand hard.

I've broken a few stems riding trials. But with trials you put A LOT of force on your stem with lurching and pedal kicking, pulling up and launching yourself from a dead stop.
Snapped them clean in two.

Anything thats on a bike, I've broken it.
