hubs?

i know the makes of most evey other component. but i have no clue where to look for hubs. i know chris king makes expensive hubs. and shimano makes xt hubs which are OK. but what is in between them. a nice xc hub?

Maelstrom 04-30-06 10:29 AM

Hope and hadley would fit nicely in between. What sets the "boutique" hubs apart beyond durability is also the engagement points.

No, the engagement inside the freehub. I would also recommend dt swiss/hugi hubs, not as pricey as kings, but very nice.

Maelstrom 04-30-06 10:43 AM

Oh are you looking for a front hub or rear?

mx_599 04-30-06 11:13 AM

stealth hubs have no engagement points and are instantaneous. they are pretty cool.

i am 'thinking' of putting a wheelset togather and i am trying to get some information on hubs. so i guess both front and rear.

My new Hadley's should be here by Friday. I'm ordering another set that day. Guess what kind of hubs I like?

And very rare - if you can find me a rear disc mtb version, let me know.

I have a set of Hadleys with the 108 pt rear and love 'em. Ringles also have a higher than normal engagement point count and are less costly. Some people have had problems with them, but not me.

just talked with todd and they are making brand new ones! they should be ready in about a month he said. they are improved as well.

Many of the mega-stout component makers make good hubs. The ones that come to mind are (you know I'll say this) SYNCROS; plus AtomLab, Bombshell, Funn, Roox, Woodman, etc. Some make 48-hole versions too, in case you want to do a real crazy wheel build.

Hmmm...I heard that same story over a year ago.

My guess is it'll come out at the same time as the Chris King bottom bracket.

I think he was trying to imply it has been a rumoured part for eons ;)

Chris King... Engagment points are solid, no play before engagment. Worth the money you spend.

Chris King is gd...i have many but they cost like @*URWJC)#$.

XT is actually really good when they are new and very smooth and cheap MSRP!

literocola 05-02-06 10:48 PM

I'd go with XT too, Im running XT with my Sun Singletrack on my Fisher. Works well. King is on all my trial bikes. -

gmoneyhobbit 05-02-06 11:39 PM

hugi hubs are some of the best, i have never used a ck hub, but have been told they are near the same, a little slower in engagement. but riding my hubs i can say the rear engages very quickly, front and rear spin forever, and are very easily maintained

nodnerb 05-03-06 06:41 AM

I'm running xt right now. Love the hubs, but it almost seems like there are less engagement points than on the deore. I have an old ~1995ish xt hub that seems to engage much sooner too. I'd love something that is instantaneous but I looked at those stealth hubs and they are far far out of my price range for just a hub.
