Travel: Can I ask this question?

I'm not sure if I'm out of place by asking this, and if I am, by all means delete it. BUT.... I'm in the military, stationed in Maryland right now, and next month I'm driving to LA en route to Hawaii where I'll be living for the next couple years. Its going to be myself, an upper intermediate rider, and my girlfriend an upper beginner on the trip, and I'm just trying to figure out where in the southwest are the best places to go. We're going to be getting to Santa Fe as quick as possible, then hit up the Grand Canyon, Sedona, Canyonlands, Zion, maybe Sequoia. Are there any great places that you guys would suggest out there. I'm not looking for a roadmap (I post on a surf forum, and hate the guys that come on looking for a handout about the best spots and when there firing, basically not trying to do any of the work for themselves), but some suggestions would be great. I've been watching the mags, and talking to the guys in all the local shops, but I'm thinking this would be a great outlet for some info as well.

You will def want to check out the locals in Sedona.

When you get to LA drop me a pm through this site and I can give you directions to some very nice trails. As far as your trip, Zion has great trails and if you have the time check out Gooseberry Mesa while in the area.

The Grand Cayon is nice but I believe you can not ride there, some one else may chime in on that.

Sedona has some great rides as well. I personally have not been there but I have a lot of buddies that make the trek out there at least twice a year. I will see if I can get you some more details on that.

There are places that have some good riding in the Sequoia's but unless the rules have changed, you will not be able to legally ride there either. Last time I was there was 15yrs ago and they did not care for us on our bikes then;)

Canyonlands is awesome as is the area around. there's so great riding around moab, but you probably knew that already.

Its like nothing you've done in the northeast. Much rockier, dryer with slickrock.
There are some great trails. Perhaps the coolest is teh White Rim, but thats a multi-day trail.
As for other trails, there's some great 1 day trails, just ask around. I know the people who own(ed?) the Poison Spider shop and we've bought a few bikes from em. They'll set you on your way.

I've been to all of those places but never with a bike! That's sore. To answer one of the questions up there: you cannot ride in Grand Canyon, only on the road. I know there is a lot of riding outside the park, though. Sedona looked like an amazing place for riding. I want to go back there.

Along with any information you get here, your best bet is to hit the bike shops in the area and ask them about good riding.
