Things to watch out for?

are there any notoriously bad brands/bikes to watch out for? ive learned from other hobbies that an ignorant salesperson can think a horrible product is quite good (fooled by the flashy words in the description).

Don't buy bikes in places that sell laundry detergent. That's my tip.

Good tip.

After that it is mostly just opinion. XXXX brand sucks because my buddies third cousin's girlfriend's brother broke his when he went over a speed bump.

No matter what brand one person says is the best someone else is going to say it sucks.

Of the specialized/trek variety there's little different. They're well made and pick by fit/build/cost.
cannondale's are quirky and more propritary. This can either be good or bad.
Fisher's are built very light. If you're light and interested in XC, it can eb a good choice. If you're big, ethre's a good chance you'll break it (I did, twice)
Santa Cruz occupies a niche between the big builders and boutique builders. They're well built and may have a bit more "soul."
Then there's the boutique builders. Full bikes rarely drop below an MSRP of $2000.There are countless brands. I'm a big fan of Titus, myself. here reputation is all you have, but a good builder's bike is well worth the extra cost.

if you are going to abuse it dont get a racing bike. get a bike that is made for the use.
there are good manufacturers who put out crappy stuff also so dont be fooled by a "full suspension bike with disc brake for under $800" as it will have less than adequete components. do some homework as well as check out mt bike review for components etc..
ex.Iron Horse, Gary Fisher, Trek, Specialized, etc. have many different models that use the same frames but have a different component package that will vary in price.
