Differences between an 01 Stumpy and newer

I am looking at some used bikes. Is the 20001 Stumpjumper the equivalent of the more recent ones in terms of frame quality? The bike has a SID Hydra Air fork. Is it a nice fork compared to the FOX that the new ones come with? Thanks, Bob.

Are you talking FSR or just the hardtail

The 2001 SIDs were known to be flexy forks, not nearly as stiff as a new Fox. They are great race forks for lighter riders however that is their limit. They are by no means an "all-mountain" fork.

The old Stumps were significantly lighter IIRC. If you're not a heavy person or a hard rider, I'd say it's worth considering the '01.

It was a hardtail on Ebay....got away as I didn't make it home in time. Oh well. I guess if the SIDS fork is flexy....I am 185 lbs. it was not the best specced bike for me. It did have a lot of nice lightweight components though. Went for $700 plus shipping.

jeebus........it had to have some great components on it hopefully.

Thats alot of money for a 5 year old hardtail.

You are right about that. It had been gone over though with new crankset (XT), Headset, (Chris King), bars, pedals, seat post, and shifters, etc. It seems in Canada we are paying quite a bit more for a bike than in the US. The cheapest Stumpjumper I can find would be last year's base model for about $1650 US with tax. I also have my eye on a Kona Kula Ddeluxe. We pay $2000 G cdn (Currently on a tear at .91 USD) plus 15% tax. I was talking to a forum member who picked one up for $1000 USD. That is a bargain. Anyway, I still am enjoying the test drive process, so it is just as well that a decision has not been made.
