crank brothers smarty and eggbeater mxr
did anyone see these pedals?
they look really cheap.
i think they are a rip off, considering you could get some better spds, that arent going to rust like the eggbeater mxr.

In what way would the other SPDs be better than the eggbeaters? I've been riding mine for 3 years now and there is very little sign of rust. The mud never builds up to the point where the cleat doesn't engage. If you don't want cheap pedals, then spend more money.

the mxr pedals are pretty low quality and have a msrp of $60. these are lower quality than the 'c' model. for that price, you could buy some shimano m540 pedals.

M540's are a completely different pedal though. Would you rather they only sold $200+ pedals so quality would always be the best? Personally I think it's nice that a company markets for the low end as well as the outrageously expensive.

i think for $60 they are taking you to the bank. Those mxrs are made of "carbon steel", which is pretty much plain steel, not stainless or anything. that means that they will rust. i for one would rather have a functional pedal over a fashionable pedal.

how does a little bit of rust interfere with the functionality of the pedal?

rust=corrosion
corrosion-The chemical or electrochemical reaction between a material, usually a metal, and its environment that produces a deterioration of the material and its properties.

I'm glad this thread came up...I think I got screwed. I bought some eggbeater Cs on ebay. They came in a C box...but looking at the pedals, they exactly like the photo of the MXRs on the crank brothers website. So basically, I got some MXRs at C price. What the...

Check it out..heres another example of eggbeaters being advertised as Cs, the box in the picture is for Cs, but the pedals look like MXRs.

the smarties are junk. instead buy some spds (ritchey, shimano m540, etc.), some time atacs, or eggbeaters/candy sls. The mxr will rust which will cause interference will clipping in and out, as well as deteriorating the metal over time. A pedal that is renowned for its mud shedding abilities shouldnt rust and corrode. The sls are made of an alloy that won't corrode, or will corrode very very slowly after being subjected to water and mud on a regular basis.

For the record, many people assume that ANY level of SPD pedal for any price are ripoffs. And BTW, you have to really make a distinction between MSRP and what they things REALLY sell for. You can find Mallet-Cs for $60 if you look good enough. I would suspect that these new MXRs will be discounted for $30-$40 once the supply chains fill up.
There is a distinction between a pedal that can will not rust in wet conditions and a pedal that cannot be used in wet conditions. I would also suspect that the guts of these MXR pedals may be different. They may have forgoed the bearing cartridge at the end of the spindle in favor of a bushing to make things cheaper. Right now, you have no idea about the metallurgy of the pedal. You have no idea about whether it will rust or not. I will tell you that they advertise the same material for the "beater" and spring as they do for the Mallet pedal. I own Mallets and they have never shown any sign of corrosion whatsoever despite being repeatedly exposed to chain rusting conditions.
I will tell you that the Crank Brothers stuff I've seen screams quality with the occasional problem. No they are not perfect, and neither is Shimano. But their customer service is outstanding. So if you do have a problem, their customer service will handle it.
