Water.

Followed shortly by a few of D.G. Yuengling's finest lagers or black and tans if at the house.
Or PBR or Highlife, whatever is in the pitcher at the kids table when downtown, not picky at the bar. Pints add up.

Compared to North American Guinness yes, but if you want a real thing of beauty, you need a Pint of Black in the west of Ireland... Fantastic...

Seriously, though I love to walk into the beer store with no brand in mind and pick up the first thing that catches my eye. It's a great way to force yourself to break the habit and try something new. That's how I discovered Creemore Springs. Great beer.
Sleemans is an import out west...arg...

Labatts...shamefull...seriously. We will set you up right when you visit

Heineken in Europe tasting different than in the states? Riiiiight. The only reason that crap is even offered in Europe, especially in it's "home" in The Netherlands, is for the tourist drinker, in a similar manner as Fosters. Many many Dutch locals advised me that Heineken is the biggest joke foisted off on the world, mostly the US. I tried it in Amsterdam from a tap and it was as skunky, boring, and tasteless as it is back home. If I was to stock any Dutch brew, it would be Oranjeboom, which has just a wee bit more character than the Heineken but does not produce such a skunky taste. Actually pretty good as a thirst quencher on hot days.

Back to Fosters: the crap we get here is not worthy, as it is really Labatts. The differences in the Canadian ingredients has made the beer taste completely different from the brew that used to be imported from AUS. It is too bad Carlton United (Fosters Group) decided to go the cheap route and start farming out the beer manufacturing to local breweries using local waters. Not that Fosters imported was really anything special. It, like Heineken, is drunk mostly by tourists back in it's home. Now, if we could get Victoria Bitter or Cascade Premium Lager in California we would be set. Thats good stuff.

Guinness...now I admit I have not had a glass poured in a pub in Dublin, but I have had several in a pub in London run by an Irishman and frequented by sons of the old sod. Just as horrible as it is back home on tap or out of the bottle. I really do not understand the draw of this stuff, when there are so many finer stouts that have some real character.

May the curse of Mary Malone and her nine blind illegitimate children chase you so far over the hills of Damnation that the Lord himself can't find you with a telescope.

Heh! Those kids better run fast cause I already pissed off some Guinness fans on another messageboard a little while ago with a review of the stuff.....

At least I was nice about my description of Guinness. I could have been very truthful and verbose in my disdain for the beer, but I hardly know anyone here and figured I better watch myself. I don't have a problem with those who like Guinness, but for myself I have never been able to understand the draw.

Has anyone here ever had a Mexican brew called Simpatico? Comes in a black bottle, and is a really good cool down and revitalize post-ride brew. My buddy Flyboy in So California introduced me to it years ago but I can't find it locally.

The secret behind Guinness draught (not the extra stout) is they put a tiny bit of soured beer from the previous batch in it. It gives it that bit of stale bitter after taste.

Meh,

To each their own I guess. Some people, my dad included can't stand Guinness. I however love it if it's poured well.... the Dutch Tavern in New London does an excellent job.

On another note.... Kirin Itchibahn is actually Anhiser . I ordered a bottle with my sushi and thought it tastes farmiliar (cheap) and then read the label.

Raise your hand if you knew from the beginning that this would turn into one of those "who can sound more sophisticated and refined " competitions.

Guinness is the way to go. Toured the factory last summer and got to drink my wifes free pint also.

And suprisingly, i was expecting in Dublin and around Ireland for the Guinness to be served at more of a room temperature, but it was served ice cold.

Anyway, I am willing to bet that I am less sophisticated than most people........

Guinness is a good starter drink to train your palate for more delightful ales down the road. It's kind of a gateway brew in that respect.

And I am far from sophisticated or refined (ask anyone who knows me), but I am certainly opinionated. And with that in mind, I can unequivocally say that in this whole thread there are only ten or twelve beers listed that I would NOT consider straight pisswater. But as they say, there's no accounting for taste.

If I'm in the midst of back to back to back hard efforts, Endurox followed by hoppy goodliness.

If it's just a normal ride, straight to the hoppy stuff:

Drakes IPA (the on-tap choice at home)
Anderson Valley Hop 'Ottin
You can't go wrong with any of the Stone brews
Lagunitas IPA
etc.
etc.

If it's that all too brief, yet truly wonderful time of the year, then it's Bigfoot time.

If none of the above is available, then Milagro Anejo is tasty in its own right.

Make that 14 or 16.

I still can't get my mouth around the barleywines, but the SN Celebration Ale is another seasonal favorite.
