Deore -> XT ??

I am currently running a full deore set but would like to replace the rear mech to a Shimano XT one...

Does this mean that i have to change the gear levers and cables as well, or can i continue to use the same ones and only replace the mech??

Thanks for your help

Just need to replace the mech, but I can heartily recommend XT cables - glanded and pre-stretched for easy setup and cleaner shifting... And no I don't work for Shimano!

You can use the same shifters (gear levers) and replace the rear derailleur (mech) with an XT.

Just out of curiosity...why the change? Missed shifts? Saved weight? Cool looking?

Cheers

If you upgrade and break the XT, you are only out that much more. May I suggest LX if you want to "upgrade" works just as good. Crisp quick shifting is all in the adjustment.

Once you get your new derailleur on if you still have any problems have your derailleur hanger checked. A lot of times they will get slightly bent when you hit your derailleur on something hard enough to break it.

Upgrading to XT isn't a problem. If you wanted to switch to SRAM, that would be a problem. You see, shimano uses a 2:1 ratio, meaning that as the shifter moves the cable (we'll use 1mm for sake of argument), the shifter moves 2mm.

With SRAM it's a 1:1 ratio, so Shimano and SRAM components are NOT compatible.

However, some sram gripshift are compatible with shimano rear derailleurs (Attack & Rocket et al.) with an actuation ratio of 1:2 (or was that 2:1? lol) The reverse is what previous said: sram mechs don't work with shimano shifters.
