Fox Vanilla R 130 noise

Okay, so I bought a cheap-o Fox Vanilla 130 R fork from JensonUsa.coma and put it on my Fisher hardtail. I had to drop the travel from 130mm to 100mm. I then got a good deal on a Jamis Dakar XLT frame from the same place. I took the fork apart again and bumped the travel back up to 130mm and installed it on the Dakar.

When I did my first test ride, I noticed that there was a small howl/screetchy noise on heavy compression. I had extra Fox springs, so I took the shrinkwrap section off one of the springs that I wasn't using and put it on the top of the spring that I was using with a little bit hanging off the top. I then stuck the all-travel spacer on top of the spring inside the shrink-wrap. I worked the shrinkwrap down a bit to where it was mostly on the spring, but holding the bottom lip of the spacer firmly down against the spring.

No more noise.

The noise was the top of the coil spring rubbing the inside of the upper tube.

OMG what a nice setup...I have sooooo missed dual suspension.

nice...i have the Vanilla 125 RL...I love it.....if you have the money, its worth getting the C "RLC" as I have a float RLC for XC on a FS and its great. The L is usless most of the time. i wonder why fox didn't make RC for fork but only rear shock

I would have to agree with ya there. I would love to have Compression adjustment, but there's always thicker oil I guess.

I paid $219 for my R...an RLC would have cost me $490. The price difference wasn't worth it to me. And as far as a lockout is concerned...yup, who the heck would want one on a 5" coil fork? Mine doesn't bob that much, really. If I were training for the Olympics I guess I'd care, but I really like having suspension on the climbs. It helps me over the rough stuff.

I agree on the lockout. It's something I'd never personally use in the front and probably very seldom use in the back.

I have a Float R...the rebound adjustment is awesome. I think I could honestly say there is too much range, but that's hardly a complaint. By the way, it makes kind of a funny noise when I unload it rapidly, like popping a wheelie or bunny hopping. It's kind of a squeak and I think it's probably either the spring (I think the right leg is coil sprung anyway) rubbing the leg or from it topping out. Anybody got any ideas on that one?
