The guys at the NORBA events are actually mostly just guys from shops that work for them at the events. Shimano did make a shim kit for the XT brakes when they first came out because that is what causes the break to squeal...it's the parallel link chattering from there being small spaces in the bushings that it rotates on. And if there isn't any toe in then it causes them to chatter exsesivly. Not saying that this will definatelly stop it. The XTR brakes use different system so that is why they don't chatter, it's actually a bearing, pointless but it's still there. I know the newer XT v-s don't really have this issue....from what I've seen, I'm sure there area a few that do. Well just thought I've give some more info.

XT is more durable and basically bulletproof. XTR is for racers or posers. Look into Avid brakes, they are lighter and offer better braking power.

On my bike I use Avid brakes, Sram shifters, a LX front derailleur, a XT rear derailleur, a XT cassette and Avid 7 brakes. The LX front derailleur shifts just as well as the XT front.

Well thanks again to all who posted!! It has been very informative reading all of the remarks on different components. After much consideration and reading other reviews on mtbr.com , this is what I have decided on:

1. 2003 Avid SD7 Brake kit
2. XT RD
3. XT FD
4. XT shifter pods
5. XT Casette

Thanks again guys and hopefully with this setup my bike will become the animal it dreams to be.
