Fork travel recommendations?

I have stripped everything off of my '01 Schwinn Mesa GS XL frame (pre Pacific Cyles) and looking to build a 1x8 bike, Anyone happen to know what the recomended max travel is? I was assuming about 100mm but figured I'd ask. No disc mounts on the rear so I'm planning on 6" rotor in front and V brakes in back. I've talked to Schwinn/Pacific Cyles but they have no info on the frame other than what came on it stock.

I want to max out the travel without jeopardizing myself and busting the headtube!

Looking to build an around the town bike that is still trail worthy when I'm looking for a change from my Heckler. It is a solid frame with plenty of life still in it. Thanks for any advice.
