Anyone here live in N.C and know of some good trails

redfox 01-16-03 02:32 AM

I wish i lived in western nc.I love Tsali as well as pisgah. There are the most popular.Where are you at?

huffman 01-16-03 05:40 AM

I live in Hickory, NC and know of a number of good trails. Where do you live and how far are you willing to drive?

a2psyklnut 01-16-03 08:46 AM

You are surrounded by excellent riding. Over in Asheville there is some of the best in the area in the Pisgah Nat'l forest, there is some incredible trails down in Cane Creek, and some good trails and lift assisted trails in the Boone area (Sugar and Beech Mtn). Not to mention the already mentioned Tsali trails.

Go to your local shop, there is a book (can't remember title) that is entirely about trails in NC! You won't have to travel far to get to some great riding. Heck, I drive 12+ hours on long weekends to get to where you are!

Skip the book by Lori Finley assuming they still print it.

Just got this book by Timm Muth. Excellent resource.

a2psyklnut 01-16-03 12:22 PM

That's the one.

Plus, I always visit the local shops to find out if there are any newer trails made since publication.

I also try to look trails up on the internet if I know I'm going to be in a particular area. This website is a pretty good one for the trails around my area (Triad).

i was wonderin the same thing is there anything good around the wilmington area i will be moving there this summer

a2psyklnut 01-24-03 01:37 PM

My buddy was telling me of a trail he rode a lot that was pretty hard core. The trail name was Kitsuma. I don't have any idea where that is, but some locals might! BTW, Litespeed made a freeride hardtail named after this trail, so it should be well known, however, might be kept secret if you know what I mean!

I live in the middle of the Big Woods of western NC, and believe me, there are trails everywhere out here. Everyone knows of Tsali - but Tsali's only the tip of the singletrack iceberg. And unless you'd be fooled - Tsali is also one of the easiest trails out here. Whatever you want - rock gardens, sick steeps, waterfalls, huge views, crazy downhills - you can find it riding out here. I can be at 11 (eleven) different trail systems within an hour's drive from my shop in Dillsboro. The toughest choice most days is just deciding where to ride!

If you ever need any trail info, give me a shout at dirt_addictions@yahoo.com, or check out our website at www.NCBiking.com. We operate a mtn bike tour company out here, and I'm always glad to share maps and other info on trails.

Come on out and ride. But don't expect the trails back home to ever seem quite the same.

Kitsuma is an awesome downhill run - 13 switchbacks up the Continental Divide, and then a screaming (and I mean screaming) run back down for about 4 miles, followed by a return ride back up an abandoned section of US 70. It's one of the top 3 downhills in all of Pisgah Forest. Before we moved here, we'd hammer 4 hours out from Raleigh on Saturday morning, just to get in 2 loops at Kitsuma before driving back home.

For directions, either check with the folks at Epic Cycles in Black Mountain (about 3 miles from the trailhead), or take a look at my book, Mtn Biking North Carolina by Falcon Press.

The trailhead for Kitsuma is just off Exit #66 on I-40. You can explore, or follow someone else through. But directions are helpful if you want to return to your car.

If you need more info on trails in WNC, give me a shout at dirt_addictions@yahoo.com. Be glad to share all the maps and info I have.

Ride it like you stole it!

Horse Shoe, NC (neighbor)

leadheadnc 05-17-05 05:25 PM

King, NC...just north of Winston-Salem...@ 4 hours from Asheville.

There are some nice trails in the area (Hobby Park, Tanglewood, Owl's Roost, Westwood), but I'd also look into Uwharrie and the trails in Raleigh.

Sorry for the confusion. My email is dirt_addictions@yahoo.com

- that's "dirt", underscore, "addictions". Bloody auto-underline crap always screws me up.

Anyhow, if you need some maps, or if you want to talk trails in WNC , drop me a note, or call the shop at 828/631-1580.

cryptid01 05-23-05 04:06 PM

mmm, Pisgah.

There are lots of good trails in the Triad (Greensboro, Winston-Salem, High Point).
Greensboro has a city-sponsored mtb park.

Gorsar 05-23-05 04:54 PM

I live in the Raleigh area and ride XC at Umstead park a fair bit, and there's real good trails out at Legend Park in Clayton. I'm sure there's much more, I just haven't explored them yet..
