Need help buying new bike

Hey guys, new member here:
I used to mountain bike in the Don Valley trail in Toronto, looking for a cheap entry level mountain bike.
I found this one on performancebike.com
http://www.performancebike.com/shop/...&estore_ID=728

What do you guys think?
Also whats the deal with the shocky thing under the seat?

If your budget is $300 max, and you dont plan on racing, jumping too much, or anything fancy/hardcore....i think its a solid bike.

As for the suspension seatpost. Some people love them, others hate them. There is no deal with them...they are what the claim to be...suspension for your arse

Just make sure it fits.

My budget is around $400 USD max..I could just buy a new seatpost and put it in there right?
Can you reccomend a better bike for around $400 i could get from that site? It's the only place I can find that ships to canada.

I would like to do some minor jumps and go semi-hardcore into mountain biking. But I DO have a budget. Then again i've done some pretty crazy routes on my Supercycle so anything is an upgrade.

Btw Since im ordering online...I'm 6'0 180 pounds..i think 19 inch frame should be perfect?

Why don't you go to your local Specialized dealer and test ride one of the finest entry level bikes, the Hardrock Sport.

Doesn't look that bad. And the shock is just for a bit more comfort. But if you are going to ride the mountains, then I would maybe put a little bot more into a bike.

Well is it even a worthwhile frame do you think? I've tried to read as much as I can, I'm really new to the whole world of components and the like..Aren't the J1 shocks/disc brakes and the shifters decent for the price?

The hardrock sport retails around $500 when i was calling today in Toronto..seems hard to find anything decent in canada pricewise compared to teh USA

Buying from Performance and getting anything shipped to Ontario (especially something as heavy as a complete bike) will come with a lot of hidden costs. You'll get hit on the exchange rate, customs fees, shipping + surcharge ... possibly extra because of the weight being shipped. Your money might be better spent shopping locally. Even if you pay "more" it will still come out the same in the end, plus you'll get your bike sooner.

Some other avenues to think about if you're considering a used bike:
- www.craigslist.org <- check out the Toronto > bikes section
- www.canadiancyclist.com <- decent classifieds section too

Edit: got my spell on.

Do you already have a helmet? If not, be sure to factor that into your budget.

The hidden charges, customs etc are something to consider. How much extra would you pay at the LBS though, on top of the 500 for instance for the Hadrock? Would it just be tax or more besides that? Maybe you could ask them if they'd consider 450 for that hardrock. In a couple of months they'll probably be knocking of 10 or 15% when the 07s come out anyway. If there's more to consider besides just tax 500 would be maybe out of the picture but if you're already up to 400 couldn't you come up with the extra 100 even if it took a month to scrape it together?

...maybe offer the craig's list guy 400, it does seem like an almost new bike.

I decided to go a little more low on the price, just in case I dont get the mountain biking "Spark" this time around. I bought the bike on an online auction locally, decided to offer cash to end it early.

Can anyone tell me anything I should upgrade first?
http://www.fisherbikes.com/bikes/bik...ic&bike=Tarpon
Theres a lsit of the specs.

If that is your proper seat height, the bike looks a little big. Its a pretty long stem, so you may want to go with something in the 90mm range and see if you're not more comfortable.

i would just leave it and be happy with a nice bike at a great deal. but if you wanted to do some upgrades i would go with a fork that had 80-100mm of travel as long as your frame is ok with that travel. there are some great forks to be had for 100-200 dollars. especially at this time of year. lots of places are selling last year's stock at reduced prices. then with the front end raised a bit you can remove some of those spacers under the stem.

maybe derailleurs and brakes....but i would wait until they crap out.
