help with fork fitting please.

Well heres the deal, i dont know how to measure correctly
Lets say a steertube of a fork is 6.5 inches
When measuring from the top of the crown to the top of my stem( this is on the bike of course) i get 8 inches. 8 inches minus 1 inch of spacers equal 7 inches (my math teacher says i can still get an eighty after my exam)[these measurments are with the headset on]
so if i remove the spacers will i beable to put a fork with minimum of 6.5 inche, or its not safe?

Do you even know if your bike has a threadless headset?

Kennethfaria 06-15-06 07:25 PM

wait do i? i think so. how can i tell.
Its this one
http://www.canecreek.com/al.html
Or
http://www.canecreek.com/sx.html but i doubt it because theres absolutly no chrome and if my touching sense is right, it didnt feel like steel.

Im pretty sure its the first one, because i cheaked a while back and i remember seeing al and some numbers. ill check it in the morning to be sure.

Wow!

Dude, drop your current fork out and measure the steerer with a tape measure!

Kennethfaria 06-16-06 05:06 AM

well im an idiot for the threadless heaset question.

gahh i dont want to take it out and measure. i cant even find any of the good tools around here.
Maybe i will take it out.

If you're not sure and know that can't take measurements take the bike and new fork to a shop and let the mechanic measure, cut and install it for you.

Don't buy a fork just because it is a good deal. Get one that has the steer tube length you need.

So by removing the spacers you are now at 7". However the steerer on the new fork is 6.5". According to my math you are still 1/2" too short. That's too much unless you feel like buying a new stem and possibly a new headset with a shorter stack height.

Also, keep in mind that by losing the 1" of spacers you are going to be changing your riding position quite a bit. An inch is a big change when it comes to rider position.

Everyone makes fun of the bike you bought because they all told you not to buy it. And now you're experiencing the problems everyone warned you about.

Well played neighbour. I'll walk slowly back into my barn.

Kennethfaria 06-16-06 01:32 PM

heh you know what i find funny? Whenever i start a thread it allways goes down this road because people always bring my damn bike into it. Like in the last few threads of my mine, some person always says some crap like get a new bike, throw this one away... blah blah blah, the same thing over and over again. and then i get warned when i fight back...i think my bike has been talked about alot more than the playoffs. wow.
That's my 20 cents.

im not experiencing problems, for the fork, if i bought a hr sport i would probably find myself buying a new fork too maybe one month later but i would definitly buy a new fork, and my disk brake problem, in the last couple of months could you count how many brake threads there are? PleasE? And count how many of them have a top of the line bike, and then report back to me.
